VGLA - Communication With the Control Module

Diagnostics / Programming

The VGLA control module is connected to the diagnostic test point. The control module has diagnostics in accordance with the new concept as well as a number of programmable functions. It is possible to communicate with the VGLA control module using the System Tester. There are four different main menus with sub-menus.

Diagnostic test

Reading error codes - counter - frozen values.
The control module can identify 21 different faults.
The LED is used to indicate system faults for 10 of the error codes. For 7 of these error codes the code must occur 5 times before the fault is indicated via the LED.
Each error code has a counter showing the number of error free cycles since the error occurred.
A cycle = ignition on + speed >5 km/h + ignition off.
Indication via LED is erased after 15 error-free cycles and error codes are erased after 255 error free cycles.
A number of values are frozen (1 or 5 depending on the error code) for each error code.

Reading the reason for the alarm
The control module can store a max of 9 alarm causes in succession, the same cause can recur many times.

Erasing
Error codes can only be erased if all the error codes have been read.
Error codes - counters - frozen values and alarm causes can be erased at the same time.

Activation
A number of output signals from the control module can be activated individually.
(11 functions can be activated)
By watching - listening - measuring it is possible to manually check if the signal reaches its component and if the component works.

Monitor test
Values and status of control module's input and output signals can be read.
(32 different parameters can be read)

Reading the control module identification
The control module's part number (hardware).
Pressing HELP when the part number is shown will also display the number of the program (software).

Programming
Reading programming status
Shows the current programming of the control module.

Programming a new control module
New control modules are delivered with error code 'GLA 113' = the control module has not been programmed. While this error code is set the central locking system, alarm and courtesy light do not work.
After fitting the control module to the car it must be programmed for the actual car, connected components as well as required functions (market dependent).

Access to 3 PIN codes is required to program the control module.
The PIN codes are stored at Volvo's central vehicle register and the codes can be obtained using the same routine as for ordering keys.
PIN code 1 -> required to program codes for approved remote controls.
PIN code 2 -> required to select lock type.
PIN code 3 -> required to activate components and select functions.

Program control module (old control module)
Program codes for remote controls (PIN code 1 is required).
Max 3 codes can be entered.
The alternatives are: add code and erase old codes/add new codes.
Program/select lock type (PIN code 2 is required).
The alternatives are: Normal Two step unlocking - Blocked locking position.

NOTE: For blocked locking position to work the door locks must have the right design.

Program/select components and functions (PIN code 3 is required).
The component choice is partly determined by the type of body selected (4/5-door). The functions that can be selected are partly determined by the market (legal and insurance requirements).
