Checking control module and transmission version

Caution! Testing or swapping a control module from another vehicle may have undesirable side effects. The adaptive data in the control module can be over written which can affect the function of the transmission in the vehicle the module is being tested on or when the control module is returned to the original vehicle. It is not definite that the software in the control module is configured for the vehicle it is being swapped to. It is therefore important to check that the software in the transmission control module (TCM) and transmission correspond to the relevant engine type.

- Ignition on
- Read off the part number (P/N) of the control module (software)
- Read off the transmission P/N.
Compare software and transmission P/Ns with engine specifications. Check that these correspond. If the control module or software does not correspond, replace with the correct version.

Select one of the following options:
1. The P/N corresponds, continue fault-tracing
2. The transmission P/N does not correspond
3. The software P/N does not correspond.

1 - Checking resistance in lock-up solenoid SL circuit

2 - Replacing transmission

3 - Replacing the control module software

-------------------------------------------------

Checking resistance in lock-up solenoid SL circuit

- Ignition off
- Disconnect the control module. See Replacing the gearbox control module (TCM)
- Connect the breakout box. See Connecting breakout box, Transmission control module (TCM) Connecting Breakout Box, Transmission Control Module (TCM).
Connect an ohmmeter between breakout box:
#51 (#A51) and #53 (#A53), lock-up solenoid SL.

The ohmmeter should read 12-18 ohms.

OK - Test driving

Not OK - Checking for contact resistance and oxidation

-------------------------------------------------

Test driving
Test drive the car. See Test Drive Form, description . When test driving, the oil temperature must be above 20°C.
Look out for any transmission malfunction.

Is the transmission operating correctly?

Yes - Fault-tracing information

No - Replacing transmission

-------------------------------------------------

Replacing transmission
Earlier tests indicate that there is a fault in the transmission.
Replace the transmission.

Continue - Resetting adaptation and oil quality counter

-------------------------------------------------

Replacing the control module software
Fault-tracing indicates that the control module has a fault in the software and must be reprogrammed. Exit fault-tracing, go to the software manager and order the latest software.
See the technical journal for information about the most recent software.

Hint: To resume fault-tracing more easily select "Pause" then save a bookmark.

Continue - Verification

-------------------------------------------------

Checking for contact resistance and oxidation
Check the control module and transmission connectors. Check for contact resistance and oxidation.
Check the cable between transmission connector (transmission side) #23 and lock-up solenoid SL. Check for a short-circuit to supply voltage. Check for a short-circuit to ground. Check for an open-circuit.

Other information
- To access the transmission connector, see Inspecting/cable harness to solenoids
- To check / replace lock-up solenoid SL, see Inspecting / replacing solenoids
- Checking wiring and terminals Checking Wiring and Terminals

Select Continue when the fault has been remedied.

Continue - Verification

-------------------------------------------------

Fault-tracing information
The control module has previously registered a fault. The fault is now no longer present. A test of the transmission function indicates that everything is now OK.

Continue - No Fault Found

Resetting adaptation and oil quality counter

Resetting the adaptation

Resetting adaptation and the counter for "Transmission oil change"

Hint: The transmission has torque controlled adaptive pressure control. Pressure control means that the transmission regulates the pressure itself during each gear shift. This avoids harsh gear shifting. Each gear shift is evaluated by the control module and stored in the memory. This allows for compensation for wear and tear in the transmission and clutch. It is important that the adaptation in the memory is reset after the transmission has been repaired. This is to ensure normal operation. The oil is replaced during repair; the "Transmission oil change" counter must be reset. If the counter is not reset when the fluid is drained and replaced, there is a risk that a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) will be stored in incorrect circumstances.

Note! This applies only if the transmission or one of the components in the transmission have been replaced.

- Ignition on.
Click on the VCT2000 symbol to reset the adaptation and counter.

Hint: After carrying out the repair, check that the fault has been remedied.

- Ignition off.
- Reconnect connectors, reinstall components
- Ignition on.
Test drive car according to Test Drive Form, description When test driving the oil temperature must be above 20°C (68°F).
Beware of any irregularities in the transmission function.

Fault-tracing information

Information

Fault-tracing information
The fault should have been detected and remedied. As this is not the case fault-tracing has failed.
Exit fault-tracing for this diagnostic trouble code (DTC) or make another attempt.

Do you want to exit fault-tracing?

Yes - Exit fault-tracing

No - Attempt New Test
