Checking noise in the transmission
- Test drive the car. See Test Drive Form, description
- Check for any clearly audible noises from the transmission.
Is the transmission making a noise?
Yes - Replacing the transmission
No - Checking the oil quality and the oil level in the transmission
-------------------------------------------------
Checking the oil quality and the oil level in the transmission
Note! Transmission fluid quality and level are extremely important for the function of the transmission. Therefore it is imperative that these are correct. In addition the oil level is dependent on oil temperature.
- Ignition on
- Read off the oil temperature.
Check both the oil level and grade.
Check the oil level. See Checking oil level Checking Oil Level.
Check the oil grade. See Oil, quality check .
Remedy as necessary.
Was the oil level and grade OK?
Yes - Checking the transmission control module (TCM) and transmission version
No - Resetting the oil quality counter
-------------------------------------------------

Resetting Transmission fluid change counter
Resetting Transmission fluid change counter
Hint: The transmission control module (TCM) has a counter for the oil quality. The counter counts up if the transmission is exposed to too high a load or an ambient temperature that is too high. If the counter is not reset when the oil is drained or changed, there is a risk that a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) will be stored in faulty circumstances. Therefore it is important that the "Transmission oil change" counter is reset.
Note! This applies only when the transmission fluid is changed and when the fluid is changed when repairs are carried out to the transmission temperature sensor.
- Ignition on.
Reset the counter by clicking on the VCT 2000 symbol.

Checking the transmission control module (TCM) and transmission version
Note! It is essential that the control module software and the transmission are matched with the engine type. The control module version depends on the software version that is programmed.
- Ignition on
- Read off the part number (P/N) of the control module (software)
- Read off the transmission P/N.
Compare the software and transmission P/Ns with the engine specifications. Check that these correspond. If the control module or software does not correspond, replace with the correct version.
Select one of the following options:
1. The P/N corresponds, continue fault-tracing
2. The transmission P/N does not correspond
3. The software P/N does not correspond.
1 - Checking the adjustment of the gear-shift position sensor
2 - Replacing the transmission
3 - Ordering software
-------------------------------------------------
Checking the adjustment of the gear-shift position sensor
Check gear-shift position sensor adjustment. See Checking/adjusting gear-shift position sensor .
Remedy as necessary.
Is the gear-shift position sensor incorrectly adjusted?
Yes - Verification
No - Checking the resistance in the circuits for solenoid S1 and S2
-------------------------------------------------
Checking the resistance in the circuits for solenoid S1 and S2
- Ignition off
- Disconnect the control module. See Replacing the gearbox control module (TCM) .
- Connect the breakout box. See Connecting breakout box, Transmission control module (TCM) Connecting Breakout Box, Transmission Control Module (TCM).
Connect an ohmmeter between breakout box:
#A50 (#A50) and #A53 (#A53), solenoid S1
#B8 (#A68) and #A53 (#A53), solenoid S2
The ohmmeter should read 12-18 ohms.
OK - Test driving
Not OK - Checking for contact resistance and oxidation
-------------------------------------------------
Test driving
Test drive the car. See Test Drive Form, description . When test driving, the oil temperature must be above 20°C.
Look out for any transmission malfunction.
Is the transmission operating correctly?
Yes - Fault-tracing information
No - Replacing the transmission
-------------------------------------------------
Replacing the transmission
Earlier tests indicate that there is a fault in the transmission.
Try a new transmission.
Continue - Resetting the adaptation and oil quality counter

Ordering software
The control module software is faulty. The control module can be programmed with new software. The software must be replaced to remedy the fault.
Order appropriate software. Programming and Relearning

Programming the control module
Programming can be carried out when the software has been delivered.
Program the control module according to the table below.

Checking for contact resistance and oxidation
Check the transmission and control module connectors. Check for contact resistance and oxidation. See Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.
Other information:
- To access the transmission connector, see Inspecting/cable harness to solenoids .
Select Continue when the fault has been remedied.
Continue - Verification
-------------------------------------------------
Fault-tracing information
The control module has previously registered a fault. The fault is now no longer present. A test of the transmission function indicates that everything is now OK.
Continue - No Fault Found

Resetting the adaptation and oil quality counter
Resetting the adaptation
Resetting adaptation and the counter for "Transmission oil change"
Hint: The transmission has torque controlled adaptive pressure control. Pressure control means that the transmission regulates the pressure itself during each gear shift. This avoids harsh gear shifting. Each gear shift is evaluated by the control module and stored in the memory. This allows for compensation for wear and tear in the transmission and clutch. It is important that the adaptation in the memory is reset after the transmission has been repaired. This is to ensure normal operation. The oil is replaced during repair; the "Transmission oil change" counter must be reset. If the counter is not reset when the fluid is drained and replaced, there is a risk that a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) will be stored in incorrect circumstances.
Note! This applies only if the transmission or one of the components in the transmission have been replaced.
- Ignition on.
Click on the VCT2000 symbol to reset the adaptation and counter.
