Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) Information

Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) information ECM-9160

Condition

Electronic throttle module (ETM) monitors continuously that the two internal throttle position sensors' signals are within permitted limits and that they show the same values.
- If Electronic throttle module (ETM) registers that the signal from any of the throttle position sensors at any time is outside the upper or lower limit for longer time than 0.1 seconds, then this information is sent to Engine control module (ECM), which then stores diagnostic trouble code ECM-9150/9160, Faulty signal.
- Every time the ignition is turned on the Electronic throttle module (ETM) controls the throttle disc to its lower mechanical stop position(closed throttle). The Electronic throttle module (ETM) checks that the throttle position sensors' signal is within a certain range. If Electronic throttle module (ETM) registers that any of the throttle position sensors' signals are outside this range, then this information is sent to Engine control module (ECM), which then stores diagnostic trouble code ECM-9150/9160, Faulty signal.
- Electronic throttle module (ETM) checks continuously that the two internal throttle sensors show the same throttle position. If the difference between the sensors' signal is greater than 5 % for longer time than 0.2 seconds, then this information is sent to Engine control module (ECM), which then stores diagnostic trouble code ECM-9150/9160, Faulty signal.

For upgraded software, released during year 2006 or later, the following is changed:
- The test that Electronic throttle module (ETM) performs every time the ignition is turned on, now requires that both throttle position sensors' signals are outside the expected range, two test in a row, in order to store the diagnostic trouble code.
- Electronic throttle module (ETM) checks continuously that the two internal throttle sensors show the same throttle position. A choice of signal will take place when the difference between signals is greater than 2 %. The signal choice makes it possible to continue driving until the difference between the throttle position sensors' signals is clearly greater than for earlier software. The diagnostic trouble code is stored when the deviation between the two signals is 15 % for 5 seconds at low throttle angles.

Substitute value

Closing of throttle during braking.
The accelerator pedal position is ignored when the brake pedal is depressed.
In case diagnostic trouble code ECM-9150 and ECM-9160 are stored together:

Throttle closed.
The electronic throttle module (ETC.) deactivates the throttle motor control, which means that the throttle is not actuated and assumes its mechanical stop position. This means about 20% throttle opening. This reconfiguration is always followed by fuel cut-off.

Fuel cut-off that follows accelerator pedal position.
Engine speed is regulated via fuel cut-off by deactivating the injectors one at a time. Engine speed is determined by gas pedal position sensor position and engine speed is maximized to about 5000 rpm. This reconfiguration can cause the engine to idle very unevenly since the engine control module (ECM) regulates engine speed by cutting of the fuel to the cylinders individually. Do not confuse this reconfiguration (engine behavior) with an actual driveability problem that was present before reconfiguration.

Cruise control off. Turbo engines and 6-cyl non-turbo engines
Cruise control off during entire operating cycle in which fault was detected. If the fault is no longer present, the function is available the next time the car is started.
For upgraded software, released in 2006 or later, adjustments have been made to substitute values. In the driving cycles when the problem is active the fuel shut-off will follow the accelerator pedal position.

Possible source
- Low voltage feed to throttle module (loose connections).
- Poor ground connection to electronic throttle module.
- defective throttle unit.
- This diagnostic trouble code is generated in combination with other trouble codes. Information on the possible root cause is described.

Fault symptom[s]
- the accelerator pedal (AP) is ignored when braking
- the ETS warning lamp lights (C70 and S/V70 -2000 only).
The following only applies in combination with diagnostic trouble code (DTC) ECM-9150:
- uneven idle
- jerks during engine braking
- very poor accelerator response
- maximum speed approximately 50 km/h.
