Common Data

Common data, ECC-211, ECC-212, ECC-231 and ECC-232

Information
The following diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) can be detected and stored for the position sensors for the temperature damper motors:
- ECC-211 Driver's side temperature damper motor position sensor
- ECC-212 Driver's side temperature damper motor position sensor
- ECC-231 Passenger side temperature damper motor position sensor
- ECC-232 Passenger side temperature damper motor position sensor.
The climate control module incorrectly detects the signal from the temperature damper motor position sensor. Control of the temperature motors is stopped. The temperature in the passenger compartment cannot be adjusted. The orange LEDs on the control panel flash. The above diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) may be stored. The diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) for the position sensors are therefore stored unnecessarily without there actually being a fault. This, in turn, causes an abnormally large number of fault free damper motors to be replaced. Settings in the climate control module for these diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) must be updated.
Any updating that is carried out means that the above diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) are not detected and stored.

Updating settings
- Model year 1997-1998
Use the Volvo Scan Tool (ST) with an updated memory cassette as a stand-alone tool. Updating is automatic when diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) are read off. Alternatively, select updating from the menu to update manually
- Model year 1999-
Use VIDA. Select VIDA vehicle communication. Updating is automatic when diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) are read off. Alternatively, select the specific data from the menu to update manually.

Hint: VIDA vehicle communication with model year 1999- selected also functions for model years 1997 and 1998 for this update.

Select "Continue" to check the function of the climate control system.

Continue - Checking the climate control function of the position sensor for the temperature damper motors

-------------------------------------------------

Checking the climate control function of the position sensor for the temperature damper motors

Note! For this test, the climate control and air conditioning (A/C) systems must be fault-free. Any other diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) must be remedied and erased before the function test is carried out.

1. Run the engine to normal operating temperature
2. Check the cooling function of the climate control system. Set the air distribution selector to the Vent position
3. Set the AC button to the ON position. Disengage the recirculation position (no recirculation)
4. Fully open the side vents. Close the central vents
5. Set the blower fan to maximum speed. Set both temperature selectors to maximum cooling
6. Hold a hand over both the side vents to feel the air flow. Check that there is good cooling. Check that the amount of cooling is the same from both sides
7. Then check the heat function with the engine at operating temperature
8. Keep the AC button in the ON position with recirculation disengaged
9. Set the blower fan to maximum speed. Set both temperature selectors to maximum heat
10. Hold a hand over both the side vents to feel the air flow. Check that there is good heating. Check that the amount of heat is the same from both sides.

Is the climate control functioning?

Yes - DONE

No - Checking the climate control function

-------------------------------------------------

Checking the climate control function
Check that the damper, linkage, cam discs, damper motor etc are correctly installed and can move freely and smoothly to the limit positions.

Other information:
- To access or replace the driver's side temperature damper motor, see Replacing damper motors Removal and Replacement
- To access or replace the passenger side temperature damper motor, see Replacing damper motors Removal and Replacement.

Fault-tracing information

Information

Fault-tracing information
The fault should have been detected and remedied. As this is not the case fault-tracing has failed.
Exit fault-tracing for this diagnostic trouble code (DTC) or make another attempt.

Do you want to exit fault-tracing?

Yes - Exit fault-tracing

No - Attempt New Test
