Current Too High. Intermittent Fault
Current too high. Intermittent fault
Mechanical check
Carry out the mechanical check according to Mechanical check Mechanical Check.
Was a fault found?
Yes - Fault-tracing information
No - Checking the values
-------------------------------------------------
Checking the values
- Ignition on
- Connect the Volvo Scan Tool (ST).
Read off the program status of the convertible top. Check the values at the relevant step.
Other information:
- For the comment sheet, see Diagnostic list for convertible tops Diagnostic List For Convertible Tops
- For other values, see Opening and closing the convertible top Opening and Closing the Convertible Top
- To connect the breakout box, see Connecting the convertible control unit breakout box Connecting the Breakout Box.
Are these values correct?
Yes - Checking connectors and wiring
No - Calibrating the convertible system
-------------------------------------------------
Checking connectors and wiring
- Ignition off
- Check control module connector D for an intermittent short-circuit to supply voltage according to Checking wiring and terminals. Intermittent faults Checking Wiring and Terminals. Intermittent Faults
- Ignition on.
Connect a voltmeter in order between:
motor D5 and ground, convertible top, left-hand side.
motor D12 and ground, convertible top, right-hand side.
Check for an intermittent short-circuit to supply voltage according to Checking wiring and terminals. Intermittent faults Checking Wiring and Terminals. Intermittent Faults.
Remedy as necessary.
Other information:
- To access and replace the control module see Replacing the control module Service and Repair
- To connect the breakout box, see Connecting the convertible control unit breakout box Connecting the Breakout Box.
Was a short-circuit found?
Yes - Fault-tracing information
No - Checking the engine
-------------------------------------------------
Checking the engine
- Ignition off
- Check the relevant motor connector for an intermittent short-circuit to supply voltage according to Checking wiring and terminals. Intermittent faults Checking Wiring and Terminals. Intermittent Faults
- Ignition on.
Connect a voltmeter between motor 1 and ground and between 2 and ground. Check for an intermittent short-circuit to supply voltage according to Checking wiring and terminals. Intermittent faults Checking Wiring and Terminals. Intermittent Faults.
Replace the motor if there is a short-circuit in the motor.
If no fault is found there is probably a short-circuit in the cable between the control module and the motor connectors.
Remedy as necessary.
Other information:
- To access and replace the relevant motor, see Replacing motors Service and Repair.
Was a short-circuit found?
Yes - Fault-tracing information
No - Checking the wiring
-------------------------------------------------
Checking the wiring
- Check that the micro-switch for the tensioner rib appears normal
- Ignition on
- Read off the status of the micro-switch
- Operate the micro-switch manually.
The status should change from activation (micro-switch on) to non activation (micro-switch off).
Remedy as necessary.
Other information:
- To access and replace the micro-switch for the tensioner rib see Replacing and adjusting micro-switches Replacing and Adjusting Micro-Switches
- There is a short-circuit to ground if the status is low when the switch inactive
- There is an open-circuit or a short-circuit to supply voltage if the status is high when the -switch is activated.
Hint: The micro-switch can be activated by hand or using a pointed tool. Be careful.
Does the status change?
Yes - Fault-tracing information
No - Checking the component
-------------------------------------------------
Checking the component
- Check the micro-switch connector and control module connector C for contact resistance and oxidation according to Checking wiring and terminals. Intermittent faults Checking Wiring and Terminals. Intermittent Faults.
Connect an ohmmeter between micro-switch 1 and 2.
Activate the micro-switch manually so that it is active throughout the test.
Check for an intermittent open-circuit according to Checking wiring and terminals. Intermittent faults Checking Wiring and Terminals. Intermittent Faults.
Replace the micro-switch if an open-circuit is found.
Remedy as necessary.
Other information:
- To access and replace the control module see Replacing the control module Service and Repair
- To access and replace the micro-switch for the tensioner rib see Replacing and adjusting micro-switches Replacing and Adjusting Micro-Switches.
Hint: The micro-switch can be activated by hand or using a pointed tool. Be careful.

Information
Fault-tracing information
If the fault is intermittent, do not verify fault-tracing if the fault does not recur.
It is possible to view the information again, or leave fault-tracing for this diagnostic trouble code (DTC).
Do you want to view the information again?
