Oil inspection
Oil, quality check
Check the oil
Note! Only ATF oil which meets the demands for Dexron II E and Ford Mercon may be used.
Check the oil by taking a sample with the dipstick.
Discolored or burnt smell?
- Check whether the diagnostic unit has recorded any diagnostic trouble codes (DTC code 2-3-5).
- If DTC 2-3-5 is displayed, smell the oil.
- Also fault-trace the transmission per DTC 2-3-5.
- Change oil.
Is there water in the oil (grey discoloration)
- Determine the reason why water is present in the oil.
- Replace transmission according to Gearbox, replacing .
- Flush oil cooler and oil lines clean according to Removing Transmission, Removal.
Check oil level
Conditions
Flat surface, parking brake set, foot brakes applied, engine idling, gear selector in position P.
Move the gear selector through all positions, stopping in each position for 3 seconds.
Return gear selector to position P and wait 2 minutes before checking oil level.
The dipstick must be pushed down completely in the dipstick tube.
Note! Wipe dipstick with a nylon cloth or the equivalent, i.e. a material free from lint and loose threads.
Low level
Note! The level varies depending on oil temperature!
Check temperature chart before filling with oil.
The difference between MAX- and MIN-volume is 0.5 liters (0.5 US qts). Oil temperature in the transmission can be checked using Volvo Scan Tools (Diagnostic Key or Volvo System Tester) in DTM 5 .
At room temperature (+20 °C = 68 °F) the level should be between the bottom of the dipstick and the second mark down from the cold range, see illustration. The "cold range" (+40 °C = 104 °F) is reached after approximately 15 minutes of idling, while the "hot range" (+80 °C = 176 °F) is reached after approximately 30 minutes of highway driving at an air temp. at+15 °C (= 59°F). The check should be carried out at an oil temperature of +80 °C (176 °F).
High level (overfilling)
Caution! The oil may be very hot if the car has just been driven. Avoid contact with your skin. The transmission must not be operated if the oil level is too high due to overfilling. This can cause increased operating temperatures and oil leakage.
Drain off oil
Undo the drain plug.
Allow some of the oil to run out and reinstall the plug. Torque nut to 40 Nm (18 ft. lbs)
Check the level (see above), taking the temperature into consideration. See chart.
