Fault in circuit. Permanent fault

Checking stop (brake) light status




- Ignition on.
- Go into scrolling values, list 3.
Read off stop (brake) lamp switch) position.
With the brake pedal up this value should be OFF. With the brake pedal depressed this value should be ON.





Is the value ON at all times?

Yes - Checking the stop (brake) light switch

No - Checking the stop (brake) light

- Remove soundproofing.
- Ignition on.
- Go into scrolling values, list 3.
Disconnect stop (brake) lamp switch and read off stop (brake) lamp switch position.









Does the value change to OFF?

Yes - Checking stop (brake) lamp switch adjustment

No - Checking for a short-circuit

Checking for a short-circuit
Check cable between control module #12 and stop (brake) lamp switch connector terminal 2 and cable to stop (brake) lamp for a short-circuit to supply voltage according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.
On vehicles with automatic transmission: Check cable between stop (brake) lamp switch connector terminal 2 and automatic transmission control module (TCM) #B26 for a short-circuit to supply voltage according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.









Select "Continue" when the fault has been repaired.

Continue - Verification

Checking stop (brake) lamp switch adjustment

Hint: The stop (brake) lamp switch is automatically adjusted.




- Remove and set stop (brake) lamp switch according to Replacing stop (brake) light switch later type Service and Repair for a new initial setting.
- Connect stop (brake) light switch.
- Brake pedal up.
- Ignition on.
- Go into scrolling values, list 3.
Read off stop (brake) lamp switch) position.





With the brake pedal up this value should be OFF.

OK - Cause of fault

Not OK - Replacing component

Cause of fault
The cause of the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) has been incorrect adjustment of the stop (brake) light switch.

Select "Continue"

Continue - Verification

Replacing component
Try a new stop (brake) lamp switch according to Replacing stop (brake) light switch later type Service and Repair.

Select "Continue" when the component has been replaced.

Continue - Verification

Checking the stop (brake) light
- Depress brake pedal.





Do the stop (brake) lamps light when the pedal is depressed.

Yes - Checking for an open-circuit in the cable

No - Checking fuse 11/12

Check cable between stop (brake) lamp switch connector terminal 2 and control module #12 for an open-circuit according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.









Select "Continue" when the fault has been repaired.

Continue - Verification

Checking fuse 11/12
Check that fuse 11/12 is intact.





Is fuse 11/12 intact?

Yes - Checking voltage before fuse 11/12

No - Checking for a short-circuit and replacing component

Check cable between control module #12 and fuse 11/12 and cable to stop (brake) lamp for a short-circuit to ground according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.
On vehicles with automatic transmission: Check cable between stop (brake) lamp switch connector terminal 2 and automatic transmission control module (TCM) #B26 for a short-circuit to ground according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.
Then replace the fuse.









Select "Continue" when the fault has been repaired.

Continue - Verification

Checking voltage before fuse 11/12




- Ignition off.
Connect a voltmeter between the rear socket (windshield side) on the fuse holder for fuse 11/12 and ground.





The voltmeter should read battery voltage.

OK - Checking power supply to stop (brake) light switch

Not OK - Checking for an open-circuit in the cable

Check cable between fuse 11/12 and battery for an open-circuit according to Checking wiring and terminals. Permanent fault Checking Wiring and Terminals. Permanent Fault.









Select "Continue" when the fault has been repaired.

Continue - Verification

Checking power supply to stop (brake) light switch




- Ignition off.
- Remove soundproofing.
Connect a voltmeter between stop (brake) lamp switch terminal 1 and ground.









The voltmeter should read approximately battery voltage.

Not OK - Checking for an open-circuit in the cable

Select "Continue" when the fault has been repaired.

Continue - Verification

- Ignition off.
Connect a voltmeter between stop (brake) lamp switch terminal 2 and ground.








- Depress brake pedal.





The voltmeter should read approximately battery voltage.

OK - Checking for an open-circuit in the cable

Not OK - Replacing component
