Vent valve, bevel gear, all-wheel drive (AWD), replacing

Background:
If oil weepage is found at the bevel gear vent, a new vent valve should be installed.





Material

Remove the bevel gear according to VADIS. 1





Pull out the brass pipe using cutting pliers. 2





Position the bevel gear upside down with the pinion facing 3
downwards at an angle of 45°.

Drill out the hole to (diameter) of 11 mm (7/16 inch).

CAUTION
Drill straight into the casting, do not hold the drill at an angle. Put grease on the drill bit to collect the metal shavings.

Grind off the surface around the drilled hole with emery cloth to ensure a smooth surface for the 0-ring.

Thread the hole using tap M12X1 (fine thread). 4





Caution!
Put grease on the tap to collect the metal shavings.





Drain the oil by turning the bevel gear so that the vent 5
hole is at the lowest position.

Tilt the bevel gear slightly forwards and backwards to drain as much oil as possible.

Check that there are no shavings left in the vent hole. Install the new vent valve. Hand tighten until the 0-ring has been slightly compressed.

Note!
Tighten by turning the entire valve, not just the cap. There is no need to use a wrench or any other tool to tighten the valve.

Position the bevel gear on the sump (the way it sits in the car). 6

Remove the check/fill plug and top up with oil (P/N 1161648), until it runs out of the hole.

Caution!
Then drain 0.1L of oil.

Install the check/fill plug. Tighten to 35 N.m (26 lbf-ft).

Install the bevel gear according to VADIS. 7
