Propeller shaft CV joint, replacement

Removal

Marking the rear propeller shaft
- Mark the position of the propeller shaft flange in relation to the torque rod's flange.

Note! Carefully note the length and position of screws on the propeller shaft CV joint.



- Remove the propeller shaft screws. Use counterhold 999 5743 .

Marking the front propeller shaft
- Mark the position of the propeller shaft flange in relation to the bevel gear flange.



- Remove the propeller shaft screws. Use: 999 5743.

Removing components

- Remove:



- Remove the two screws (2) holding the propeller shaft to the SIPS member
- the screws (1) for the SIPS member one at a time. Screw them in again 4 turns
- the propeller shaft. Place the propeller shaft in a vise. Use pieces of wood in the jaws.

- The propeller shaft must be replaced if it is damaged.

Removing the front cover



- Tap the front cover loose from the propeller shaft CV joint. Remove the snap ring.

Removing the propeller shaft CV joint



- Pull the propeller shaft CV joint from the axle. Use: 999 5427

Note! Never load the propeller shaft CV joint axially by pulling or tapping the joint's outer ring. The joint's bearing race can split.

- Remove the clamp and the old boot with cover from the axle. Clean the axle end.

Lubricating the propeller shaft CV joint



- Lubricate the propeller shaft CV joint thoroughly. Apply grease to the front cover towards the boot and to the middle of the rear cover.

Installation

Installing the propeller shaft CV joint



- Install the boot and gasket on the propeller shaft.
- Tap the joint into its seating on the propeller shaft. Use: 999 5345
- Install the new snap ring. Ensure that the snap ring is in the groove.

Securing the gasket



- Ensure that the sealing surface in the propeller shaft CV joint's rear edge is not greased. Secure the gasket at the front edge of the joint using a small amount of grease. Use sealant 1 161 099-5 on the rear of the cover.

Installing the cover



- Press the front and rear cover into place. Use: 999 5427 .

Installing the boot



- Press the boot into the cut-out on the propeller shaft. Install the clamp with the raised areas towards the boot. Tighten using flat-nosed pliers. Fold the end of the clamp as illustrated.

Installing components



- Install:
- the propeller shaft
- the screws (2). Tighten to 25 Nm
- the screws (1). Tighten to 25 Nm.

Installing the rear propeller shaft
- Check that the viscous coupling and propeller shaft flange mating surfaces are clean.
- Install the propeller shaft as marked. Use new screws of the same length. Place the screws in the same position as before. Tighten the screws crosswise. First tighten to 8 Nm. Then tighten to 30 Nm.



- Use: 999 5743 Start the tightening with the same screw both times.

Installing the front propeller shaft
- Check that the bevel gear and propeller shaft flange mating surfaces are clean.
- Install the propeller shaft as marked. Use new screws. Tighten the screws crosswise. First tighten to 8 Nm. Then tighten to 30 Nm.



- Use: 999 5743 Start the tightening with the same screw both times.
