Replacing the ball joint

Background:

A new special tool has been introduced for removing/installing the ball joint on the front suspension. This service bulletin describes how to replace the ball joint.

Removal

Removing the nut for the control arm

Remove the front wheels.





Remove the nut for the control arm. Use a Torx-40 wrench as a counterhold.

Releasing the spring strut

Warning!
Ensure that the strap ends are mounted securely on the control arms.





Pull down the control arms (1) transporter's tie-down strap (2).

Release the spring strut from the control arm.

Removing the drive shaft





Remove the screw for the drive shaft. Use a screwdriver as a counterhold in the brake disc.

Remove the drive shaft from the hub. Knock out the drive shaft using a brass drift.

Push the spring strut to one side.

Removing the ball joint and the rubber seal





Remove the screws for the ball joint, Remove the rubber seal (1).

Installing the inner sleeve, 999 5781-1 (2 pcs.)





Install the inner sleeve so that both halves hook securely in the flange (see arrow) on the ball joint.

Turn the inner sleeve so that the gap between the two halves is at a right angle to the screw holes.

Installing the outer sleeve, 999 5781-2





Install the outer sleeve. Tighten the screw (1). Install a M12 nut (2) on the ball joint.

Screw on the nut so that the end of the ball joint stud protrudes from the nut.

Installing the guide screws 999 5781-3

The guide screws have a wrench flat (see arrow) which is offset towards one end of the tool.





Aluminum spindle: Use the screw (1) with the greater distance to the wrench flat.

Steel spindle: Use the screw (2) with the shorter distance to the wrench flat.





Screw in the guide screws (1) completely.

Installing the support, 999 5781





Install the support using 3 wheel bolts.

Installing the guide screws





Back the guide screws (1) out until they are touching the support.

Removing the ball joint





Position the supplementary support (2) 999 57814 on the hydraulic press (1).

Screw the connector (3) 999 5781-5 into place on the hydraulic press.

Engage the connector on the nut on the ball joint.

Pull the ball joint out of the control arm.

Remove the tool and the ball joint.

Cleaning the seat and the mating surfaces

Warning!
Use protective goggles.

Clean the seat and the mating surfaces for the ball joint by the spindle. Use a rotary wire brush.





Lubricate the seat using wheel bearing grease.

Installing the ball joint

Caution!
Do not remove the protective cap from the ball joint while installing the ball joint.





Loosely install the new ball joint using the guide screws.





Press the ball joint up towards the seat using the impact drift (1) 999 5796. Check that the ball joint is centered in the seat.

Knock in the ball joint using a large hammer.

Tighten the ball joint using new screws. Tighten to 50 Nm (37 lb-ft).





Remove the protective cap.

Installing the drive shaft

Reinstall the drive shaft in the hub.





Install the new screw. Use a screwdriver as a counter- hold.

Tighten to 50 Nm (37 lb-ft).

Installing the control arm and ball joint





Align the ball joints (1) in the control arm.

Warning!
Be careful when releasing transporter's tiedown strap.

Slowly release the control arms (1) by releasing the tension on the strap.

Installing the nut

Install a new nut.





Caution!
Use a Torx-40 wrench as a counterhold so that the rubber boot is not damaged. Tighten to 80 Nm (59 lb-ft).

Install the wheels. Tighten to 140 Nm (103 lbf-ft).
