Background:
In the event of moisture in the license plate light assembly, the seal between the tailgate handle and the bodywork must be replaced. The seal is delivered with the bulb holder and wiring pre-installed.

Removing the tailgate handle
Remove the panel and the wiper unit from the tailgate according to the method in Service Manual Section 8 (82-86, 88) Interior, exterior S70/V70 1997- Section DA (panel) and the method in Service Manual Section 3 (35-38) Lighting, instrumentation and other electrical equipment S70/V70 1997 Section CB (wiper unit).
Remove:
- lock cylinder link rod.
- tailgate opener link rod.
- the nuts (x 4)
- the license plate lighting connector and remove it through the cover.
- handle, ease out carefully.

Removing the license plate light assembly and seal
Remove the license plate light assembly and seal (1).
Clean the license plate light assembly lens (see the arrows in the illustration).

Apply sealing compound
Apply extra sealing compound in the track above the gap where the wiring will be routed (between the arrows in the illustration).
Use wheel bearing grease, P/N 1161241-3.

Installing new seal
Install a new seal with new bulb holders and wiring (1) P/N 9187648-2.

Apply sealing compound around the wiring
Apply sealing compound around the wiring at the outer edge of the track (closest to the lamp housing).

Installing seal
Install the seal on the tailgate handle. The mounting points are marked with arrows on the illustration.
Locate the seal in the track above the gap where the wiring is located.

Preparations before installing the tailgate handle
Preparation
Check that the handle mounting reinforcement panel is centered on the holes in the tailgate.
It necessary file out the holes in the reinforcement panel so that the handle and gasket are in contact with the cover along its entire length and that there is no tension in the handle.
When installing the handle it is important that the handle is pressed forwards / upwards and that both the center nuts are tightened first.
It is important that the pressure on the handle is maintained throughout the tightening proceedure.

Installing the handle
Install:
- the handle.
- lock cylinder link rod.
- tailgate opener link rod.
- 4 nuts. When installing the handle it is important that the handle is pressed forwards / upwards and that both the center nuts are tightened first. It is important that the pressure on the handle is maintained throughout the tightening.
Tighten both the center nuts first.
Then tighten both the outer screws.
Install the license plate lighting connector.
Reinstall the wiper unit.
Function check: lock, lighting and tailgate wiper.

Function test
Leak test the tailgate handle
Test the seal by flushing the rear windshield with a water hose so that the water runs down over the tailgate handle for at least 2 minutes.
Check that no water has entered the license plate light assembly.
In the event of leakage the handle must be removed and the seal adjusted.
Reinstall other removed components.
Check the function of the lock and lighting including the internal handle.
WARRANTY STATEMENT: Warranty may be submitted under the new car factory warranty when there is a documented customer complaint, using claim type 01.
