New bracket in the sub-frame for mounting the catalytic converter

Background

Resonance and vibration may be transmitted into the body of the vehicle from the catalytic converter and exhaust system. A new bracket for mounting the catalytic converter has been introduced. This Service Bulletin describes how to install the new bracket for the catalytic converter in the subframe rather than the bodywork.

Subframe bracket for catalytic converter mounting, replacement

Removal 1

Remove the:

- splash pan
- four screws for the front cross member
- screws for the exhaust pipe mounting in the front cross member
- brake pipe from its holder in the member
- clamp for the wiring for the heated oxygen sensor from the subframe.

Installing, marking and drilling 2

Raise the exhaust system. Use a jack stand. Hold the bracket on the subframe.
Centre the console in relation to the mounting on the catalytic converter/exhaust pipe.
Mark the positions of the holes (A) on the subframe.
Vehicles where the heated oxygen sensor wiring is attached at the right side with a clip a new hole (B) has to be made.
Mark for a new hole (B) for the heated oxygen sensor wiring so that it is approximately 10 mm to the right of the bracket.

Remove the:

- the bracket
- the mounting from the three-way catalytic converter (TWC)/exhaust pipe (S80 only).

Drill:

- two pilot holes (A) using a 3 mm (1/8") drill bit
- enlarge using a 11 mm (7/16") drill bit
- hole (B) for the heated oxygen sensor wiring using a 5 mm (13/64") drill.

Removing the rubber bushings 3

Remove the rubber bushings from the mounting.

Note!
On S60 and V70 vehicles the bracket is welded to the catalytic converter.

Installing the rubber bushings 4

Install the new rubber bushings as illustrated.

Note!
The flatter side of the bushing should face the front of the car (see Arrow).

Installing bracket 5

Install:

- the bracket for the sub frame using the screw and nut (2). Tighten to 50 Nm
- the mounting (1) for the three-way catalytic converter (TWC)/exhaust system in the rubber bushings (S80 only). Tighten to 24 Nm
- the clamp for the heated oxygen wiring.

6

Drill a 13 mm (1/2") hole in the bracket through the existing hole in the subframe.

Install the nut and screw. Tighten to 50 Nm.

7

Install the:

- four screws by the front cross member
- brake pipe from the holders in the member.
