Vehicles Involved: Automatic transmission

Automatic transmission final drive, whining sound

Background:

This Service Bulletin describes how to install a damper on the drive shaft. The whining sound may be heard at 40-60 km/h (25-40 mph). The sound may be heard more clearly when the transmission is warm and the vehicle is driven with low engine load.

On cars that are already fitted with a steel vibration damper but still produce a whining sound, the damper should be replaced with a new style.

Table 1

The chassis numbers shown in the table are covered by the service solution using individual vibration dampers.

Material:

The following material is required for the chassis numbers shown in Table 1.

Table 2

Vehicles within the chassis numbers listed in the table may require the replacement of the drive shaft. (1999 turbo only)

Note!
Before replacing the drive shaft, contact your Field Technical Specialist or Volvo Tech Hotline for authorization.

Installing vibration damper

Mark the distance (A) from the outer constant velocity joint where the vibration damper should be placed.

The measurement (A) shall, for the following model years, be:

- 1998 A = 55 mm (2.2")
1999 Turbo - A = 27 mm (1.05")
1999 Normally aspirated engines - A = 56 mm (2.2")

Install the vibration damper on the drive shaft.

Fit a hose clamp (1) around the vibration damper.

Tighten the hose clamp until free passage for the lock pin (3) is obtained. Check using a e 2-2.5 mm (0.08"- 0.100") wire.

Check that the vibration damper is at the correct distance from the outer constant velocity joint.

Press in the lock pin using universal grip pliers.

Remove the hose clamp.

Install the wheel
