Automatic transmission final drive, whining sound
Background:
This Service Bulletin describes how to install a damper on the drive shaft. The whining sound may be heard at 40-60 km/h (25-40 mph). The sound may be heard more clearly when the transmission is warm and the vehicle is driven with low engine load.
On cars that are already fitted with a steel vibration damper but still produce a whining sound, the damper should be replaced with a new style.

Removing LH front wheel
Remove the LH front wheel.

Check if a (steel) vibration damper is mounted
If a (steel) vibration damper is not mounted, see 3.
If a (steel) vibration damper is mounted see 4.

Cleaning the drive shaft
Remove decal.
Clean drive shaft with H Cleaner.

Remove existing vibration damper
Remove vibration damper (two screws).
Note!
The bolts holding the damper have been mounted with thread lock when installed. The vibration damper is also mounted with lock fluid. It may be necessary to tap the damper loose with a light hammer.
Caution!
Great caution must be taken not to damage the drive shaft when removing the old damper.
Clean drive shaft with H Cleaner.
Note!
In vehicles with chassis numbers shown in Table 2 the drive shaft may have to be replaced, see Drive shafts removing and Drive shafts, installing Service manual Section 4 (43), Automatic transmission AW 50-42, 850 1996-, section HHA26 and section HHA47-48 or VADIS. If drive shaft need to be replaced, SB 61-0002 must be followed when separating ball joint from steering knuckle.

Before replacing the drive shaft, contact your Field Technical Specialist or Volvo Tech Hotline for authorization.

Installing vibration damper
Mark the distance (A) from the outer constant velocity joint where the vibration damper should be placed.
The measurement (A) shall, for the following model years, be:
- 1998 A = 55 mm (2.2")
1999 Turbo - A = 27 mm (1.05")
1999 Normally aspirated engines - A = 56 mm (2.2")
Install the vibration damper on the drive shaft.
Fit a hose clamp (1) around the vibration damper.
Tighten the hose clamp until free passage for the lock pin (3) is obtained. Check using a e 2-2.5 mm (0.08"- 0.100") wire.
Check that the vibration damper is at the correct distance from the outer constant velocity joint.
Press in the lock pin using universal grip pliers.
Remove the hose clamp.
Install the wheel
