Pyrotechnic Seat Belt Tensioner - Replacement
Replacement RequirementAfter a collision in which the SRS system has been activated. Always replace both seat belt tensioners and buckles, even if there was no passenger in the passenger seat.
Removing Front Seat Seat Compartment
- Front seat as far forward as possible.
- Remove seat compartment by lifting up its front edge and pushing it back.
The figure shows a mechanical front seat.
For power seat:
Disconnect connector from power seat control module. The control module is located under the seat.
Secure The SIPS-bag
WARNING: If the front seat is equipped with a SIPS bag this must be secured before starting work. Use the transport safety device in the holder on the inside of the seat compartment cover on the inside of a SIPS seat. Never apply external force to side of seat.

- Remove the transport safety device from the holder on the inside of the cover. (On all SIPS seats.)
- Install the transport safety device on the SIPS sensor.
Removing "B" Post Inner Panel
- Make a note of radio code if anti-theft coded radio installed.
- Ignition off.
- Disconnect battery negative lead.
- Remove "B" post inner panel. Pull off (attached with clips).
Removing Connector From Seat Belt Tensioner
WARNING: The battery must not be connected when SRS ignition cable igniter connector is removed or installed.
- Remove SRS ignition cable igniter connector from seat belt tensioner.
Removing Seat Belt Tensioner And Seat Belt
WARNING: Under no circumstances use an ohmmeter or other live measuring instrument to take readings on a disconnected non-deployed pyrotechnical seat belt tensioner. This could deploy the seat belt tensioner.
Remove:
- seat belt from seat mounting (1 x 12 mm screw).
- seat belt tensioner from 'B' post (1 x Torx 30).
- seat belt (inertia) reel from "B" post (2 x 14 mm screw).
WARNING: The seat belt tensioner must never be taken apart, repaired or moved to another vehicle. Follow instructions on handling a replaced seat belt tensioner. Handling Non-Deployed Airbag Modules and Seat Belt Tensioners
Installing Seat Belt Tensioner And Seat Belt
WARNING: Under no circumstances use an ohmmeter or other live measuring instrument to take readings on a disconnected non-deployed pyrotechnical seat belt tensioner. This could deploy the seat belt tensioner.
Install:
- seat belt to seat mounting (1 x 12 mm screw).
- Seat belt tightening torque = 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
- seat belt (inertia) reel to "B" post (2 x 14 mm screw).
- Seat belt (inertia) reel tightening torque = 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
- seat belt tensioner to "B" post (1 x Torx 30).
- Seat belt tensioner tightening torque = 6 Nm (4.5 ft. lbs.).
Installing Seat Belt Tensioner Connector
WARNING: The battery should not be connected when SRS ignition cable igniter connector is removed or installed.
- Connect SRS ignition cable igniter connector to seat belt tensioner.
Installing "B" Post Inner Panel
- Install "B" post inner panel. Push into place (attached with clips).
Checking Seat Belt Operation
- Check that the seat belt (inertia) reel locks as it should. Test this by pulling it out and jerking it repeatedly.
Unsecure The SIPS-bag
NOTE: If the seat is not equipped with a SIPS-bag, continue with installing front seat seat compartment.
WARNING: If the front seat is equipped with a SIPS bag this must be unsecured when work is finished. Remove the transport safety device from the SIPS sensor. Never apply external force to side of seat.
- Remove the transport safety device from the SIPS sensor.
- Install the transport safety device in the holder on the inside of the cover.
Installing Front Seat Seat Compartment
- Install seat compartment.
The figure shows a mechanical front seat.
For power seat:
Connect connector to power seat control module. The control module is located under the seat.
Final Check
WARNING: Ensure that nobody is in the car when the battery is being connected.
When all components have been reinstalled:
- Switch the ignition to position II.
- Connect battery negative lead.
Check any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).
- Connect the Volvo Scan Tool (ST) and check for DTCs.
