A simple special tool has been developed to facilitate fault-tracing and to check the SRS system before an airbag/pyrotechnical seat belt tensioner is reinstalled after fault-tracing or repair.

By removing an airbag/seat belt tensioner and replacing it with the special tool, the SRS system can be checked without the on-board diagnostic (OBD) system posting a diagnostic trouble code (DTC).

The tool has the same resistance and connector as the airbags/seat belt tensioners.

The tool has a short-circuit element which short-circuits the terminals when it is not connected.

It is important when fault tracing and checking the SRS system that the special tool is faultless. A defective special tool will cause faulty readings in the diagnostic system and make fault tracing and checking more difficult.

NOTE: To ensure that the special tool is fault free it should always be calibrated using an ohmmeter before it is used. Follow calibration instructions.




Areas of use for special tool 998 8695:
^ Inspecting the SRS system during fault-tracing or repair work.
^ Checking the sensor module.
^ Cabling check between the airbags/seat belt tensioners and the sensor module.
^ Check to ascertain if an individual airbag/seat belt tensioner is defective (by a process of elimination).
^ When fault-tracing with a short test drive, to avoid a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) being posted when the car is driven with the airbags/seat belt tensioners disconnected.

For voltage and resistance readings.
The ohmmeter should have the following range and tolerance:
- 2,000 Ohms ±1%
- 200 kohms ±1%

WARNING: Under no circumstances use an ohmmeter or other live measuring instrument to take readings on a disconnected non-deployed airbag/seat belt tensioner. This could deploy the airbag/seat belt tensioner.

Use a long narrow Torx 30 for removing/reinstalling the steering wheel airbag.
