When 4th gear is selected, the selector fork moves the 3rd/4th synchromesh sleeve (12) along the synchromesh hub towards the freely-rotating 4th gearwheel (11). The synchromesh sleeve and hub then lock the 4th gearwheel (11) on the primary shaft (a).
From the clutch, power from the engine passes via the input shaft (2), the synchromesh unit on the primary shaft (A) to the 4th gearwheel (11). From here, it passes to 4th gear (17) on the lower layshaft (B) and via the final drive pinion (7) to the final drive (5).
