3rd gear (3rd)




When 3rd gear is selected, the selector fork moves the 3rd/4th synchromesh sleeve (12) along the synchromesh hub towards the freely-rotating 3rd gearwheel (13). The synchromesh sleeve and hub then lock the 3rd gearwheel (13) on the primary shaft (A).
From the clutch, power from the engine passes via the input shaft (2), the synchromesh unit on the primary shaft (A) to the 3rd gearwheel (13). From here, it passes to 3rd gear (18) on the lower layshaft (B) and via the final drive pinion (7) to the final drive (5).
