1st gear (1st)




When 1st is engaged, a selector fork moves the 1st/2nd synchromesh sleeve (15) along the synchromesh hub towards the freely-rotating 1st gearwheel (14). The synchromesh sleeve and hub then lock the 1st gear gearwheel to the lower layshaft (B).
From the clutch, power from the engine passes via the input shaft (2) to the 1st gear (8) and 1st gearwheel (14), via the synchromesh unit and lower output shaft (B) to the final drive pinion (7) and final drive (5).
