Reconditioning gear selector assembly

Special tools:
999 2412 PUNCH 999 2412 Punch
999 2852 MOUNTING RING 999 2852 Mounting Ring

Note! Remove gear selector assembly according to points Removing transmission cables Removing Transmission Cables.

Remove:




- Bevel arm locking
- Bevel arm and bushings
- The ball joints from the gear selector lever.
If only the bushings or bevel arm are to be replaced, see Lubricate the bevel arm bushings and ball joints using grease P/N 116 1236-3.

Replacing gear selector lever and gear selector lever ball joint:




Position the gear selector assembly in a vice.
Remove the gear selector lever knob and the boot from the lever. See Transmission cables, installation Transmission Cables, Installation. Remove the gear lever ball joint from the gear selector assembly by prizing up the ball joint lugs.
Pull up the ball joint and the gear selector lever from the gear selector assembly.
- Replace the ball joint and / or the gear selector lever if necessary.

Install the ball joint on the gear selector lever




Immerse the new ball joint in warm water for a short time.
Press the ball joint onto the gear selector lever ball. Lubricate using grease P/N 1161236-3.

Position the gear selector assembly on the bench




Check that the O-ring in the seat for the aluminum brackets is undamaged, and that it is flat against the bottom.

Install the ball joint and gear selector lever in the gear selector assembly
- Use drift 999 2412 PUNCH 999 2412 Punch and support ring 999 2852 MOUNTING RING 999 2852 Mounting Ring. Tap the ball joint into place in the gear selector assembly.

Lubricate the bevel arm bushings and ball joints using grease P/N 116 1236-3





Install:
- the bevel arm bushings on the gear selector assembly
- The ball joint on the gear selector lever
- the bevel arm on the gear selector assembly. At the same time align the bevel arm to the gear selector lever and install the washer and retaining clip.

Install gear selector assembly

Note! Lubricate transmission cable ball joints using grease 1161236-3.

Note! If the gear selector lever knob and boot have been removed they should be reinstalled when the gear selector assembly and center console are in position.
