Drive Shaft Seal Left/Right, Replacing






Drive shaft seal left/right, replacing

Special tools:
999 1801 STANDARD SHAFT 999 1801 Standard Shaft
999 5462 Jimmy tool 999 5462 Jimmy Tool
999 5541 PUNCH 999 5541 Punch
999 5562 PROTECTIVE SOCKET 999 5562 Protective Socket
951 2050 BEVEL PROTRACTOR 951 2050 Bevel Protractor

Removing front wheels




Remove:
- The bracket for the brake pipe and ABS cable. Let the bracket hang fee.
- The link from the anti-roll bar
- Control arm/ball joint from the wheel spindle (both sides). Install the sleeves 999 5562 PROTECTIVE SOCKET 999 5562 Protective Socket on the ball joints.

Left-hand side




Detach the drive shaft from the gearbox.
Use a jimmy tool 999 5462 Jimmy tool 999 5462 Jimmy Tool between the gearbox and the inside of the drive shaft joint.
Angle the spring strut out and remove the drive shaft from the gearbox.
Allow the drive shaft end to rest on the sub-frame.

Right-hand side




Remove:
- The splash guard under the engine
- Bearing cap for the drive shaft pilot bearing.
Loosen the drive shaft.
Press the inner part of the shaft and at the same time fold out the spring strut. Let the end of the drive shaft rest on the pipe running from the steering gear.

Removing the sealing ring




Use a crowbar.

Installing a new sealing ring




Apply a small amount of grease to the sealing lip.
Use drift 999 5541 PUNCH 999 5541 Punch and handle 999 1801 STANDARD SHAFT 999 1801 Standard Shaft.

Note! Drift in the old design (9995478) must not be used.

Left-hand side:
Place the side of the drift marked AW against the drive shaft seal.
Right-hand side:
Place the side of the drift marked AW against the drive shaft seal., turn as illustrated to the right.
Carefully knock in the sealing ring until the drift rests against the gearbox housing.

Installing the right drive shaft





Note! Ensure that the seal ring in the gearbox and the boot on the drive shaft are not damaged.

Install the bearing cap.
Torque: 25 Nm .

Installing the left drive shaft




Ensure that the ABS sensor pulse wheel on the drive shaft is free of dirt.
Press the drive shaft in properly so that it locks in the differential pinion. Exercise care so that the drive shaft's locking ring enters its locking groove. Check by carefully pulling the drive shaft's joint housing.

Note! Ensure that the seal ring in the gearbox and the boot on the drive shaft are not damaged.

Install:




- Control arm/ball joint to wheel spindle. Remove the sleeve 999 5562 PROTECTIVE SOCKET 999 5562 Protective Socket from the ball joint. Use new nuts for the screws. Tighten to 40 Nm .
- The linkage to the anti-roll bar. Use new nuts. Torque: 50 Nm .
- The brake pipe bracket.

Installing wheels




Fit to the wheels on both sides:
- Lubricate the hub's guide for the rims with rust inhibitor 1161030-0. Tighten the screws by hand. Then tighten crosswise. Torque: 110 Nm .
