Fuel Delivery and Air Induction: Description and Operation
Air intake system
1. Intake hose
2. Air cleaner (ACL)
3. Fresh air hose
4. Turbocharger (TC)
5. Upper charge air pipe
6. Charge air cooler
7. Lower charge air pipe
8. Intake manifold
Air flows from the inlet hose (1) to the air cleaner (ACL) (2), passes over the mass air flow (MAF) sensor in the fresh air intake (3) and on to the turbocharger (TC) (4) intake, after which the compressed heated air is flows via the upper charge air pipe (5) to the charge air cooler (CAC) (6) where the air temperature is reduced to give better volumetric efficiency. The air then travels through the lower charge air pipe (7) via the throttle body (TB) to the intake manifold (8).
The air intake before the filter is larger than for other 5-cylinder engines.
The air cleaner (ACL) does not have air preheating and the cover is adapted to the modified fresh air intake.
The upper torque control arm is reinforced for the TURBO, and all 5 cylinder engines from the 1994 model year onwards have a reinforced upper torque rod and reinforced lower front torque rod. The subframe mounting is also reinforced.
The firewall has an extra heavy duty heat deflector plate.
