Downloading Software

Downloading software

The software in the modules connected to the network is downloaded into the relevant control module when the car is manufactured. After the car has been delivered there may be occasion to download software for the following reason:
- When a module is replaced.
Replacement part modules are delivered without software. After installation the software must be downloaded from the Volvo database.
- Updating software.
If the software has been updated or adapted for specific driving conditions it is possible to download new software from the Volvo database.
- Installing accessories.
Certain types of accessory require new software to be downloaded into the modules. Downloading is from the Volvo database. Accessories which are installed/downloaded are registered in the Volvo database which always contains information about the car equipment/specification.

Method for downloading
Downloading software can take place in 2 different ways:
- The software can be ordered in advance and stored in VIDA cart or the network it is connected to, before being downloaded to the car at a suitable time.
- The software can be downloaded to the car when it is connected to VIDA.
In both cases the downloading function in VIDA is activated, which then contacts one of the Volvo databases which are in a number of locations. To order the software the person making the order must be authorized by the company. The software is temporarily stored in the VIDA cart or in the network at the dealership. After the software has been received the Volvo database is updated with the information that the car has accepted the new software. After this downloading to the car takes place by VIDA being connected to the car data link connector (DLC) via the VCT 2000, which is an interface between VIDA and the car.

Communication
The communication between VIDA and the Volvo database can occur in the following way depending on the market and dealership:
- Direct connection to the Volvo network.
- Via modem and telephone line.
- Via satellite.
In order to access the Volvos databases the person ordering at the dealership/workshop must be authorized by Volvo, the authorization code must be given to start communication. The data communication is encrypted and can therefore not be copied or read off by anyone unauthorized. There are also firewalls which make it impossible for unauthorized people to access the database.
