Selector Cables
Special Tools
- Fitting tool No. 999 5511, or equivalent
- Refer to special tool section for additional tool information. Tools and Equipment
Removal
1. Remove:
- Battery negative cable.
- Air Cleaner (ACL) and intake pipe.
Turbo models only: Disconnect timing valve from ACL.
2. Remove:
- Clip and washers from levers.
- Clips from cable bracket.
- Selector cables from cable bracket.
NOTE: The selector cable runs in engine compartment.
3. Remove:
- Cigarette lighter panel/storage compartment (two bolts at back).
- Some models: DLC from panel.
- Cover from under handbrake lever.
- Storage compartment lid.
Disconnect shift lever bellows (gaiter) from tunnel console.
- Press shift lever bellows (gaiter) rear fastener from underneath through the gap under the parking brake lever.
4. Remove:
- Tunnel console.
Undo connectors (the car in the picture has two).
- Screws at the front and the back of the tunnel console.
- The tunnel console.
5. Remove the selector cable lead-through from the firewall.
- Remove panel and fold back carpet to gain access to cable lead-through in the firewall.
- Undo the two bolts holding the lead-through and undo the lead-through from the bolts in the bodywork.
- Remove the screw holding the console to the tunnel (earlier models).
- Pull air duct apart.
6. Remove the shift lever and four screws.
NOTE: Remove the cross member side reinforcement members.
7. Disconnect selector cable socket joint from shift lever linkage.
Use fitting tool 999 5511.
Remove clip holding selector cables to the shift lever.
Remove the shift lever.
8. Pull cables out through center console one by one and remove complete cable assembly from car.
Installation
NOTE:
- Take care not to damage cables or sheathing by bending them too sharply.
- Be careful with cable bellows (gaiter).
- Check that shift lever housing rubber bushings and spacers are In good condition.
9. Feed new selector cables through firewall
Make sure they are on the right side of the steering wheel column.
NOTE: The LH link plate on the shift lever housing and selector cable which goes on the left are marked in yellow.
- Push cables as far down into the sheathing as possible and feed them under the air duct and through the tunnel console one by one.
- Check that the cable marked yellow runs easily into its sheathing.
The other will not run in so easily, because there is more grease in the sheathing.
10. Install:
- Clip holding selector cables to shift lever.
- Ball and socket joints to shift lever arms, using fitting tool No. 999 5511, or equivalent.
11. Install:
- Shift lever to bodywork Note 1993 models onwards:
- Fit cross-member to side reinforcement members.
- Fit four bolts to shift lever.
Tighten four shift lever bolts to 25 Nm.
- Tighten cross-member bolts to 25 Nm.
12. Install:
- Bolt to tunnel console (earlier models).
- Connect air duct.
- Two lead-through nuts.
- Panel and put carpet back in place.
13. Install:
- Tunnel console via screws at front and back of console.
- Connect connectors (the car in the picture has two).
14. Install:
- Cigarette lighter panel/storage compartment via the two screws at the back.
- Some models: fit DLC to panel.
- Cover under parking brake lever.
- Storage compartment lid.
- Shift lever bellows (gaiter) to tunnel console.
Do up the front fasteners first, then the rear ones.
15. Check that dampers on transmission cable bracket are in good condition.
Install:
- Selector cables on cable bracket using clips.
NOTE: The link plate and outermost selector cable have yellow markings.
- Lubricate selector arm pins with grease P/N 1161241-3.
- Selector cables to selector levers with washers and clips.
16. Install:
- ACL
- Timing valve on ACL (turbo models only).
- Hoses and connectors.
- Battery negative cable.
