Front Suspension




Tools Required
^ 999 5407 Clamps
^ 999 5466 Support
^ 999 5467 Socket
^ 999 5468 Counterhold
^ 999 5469 Socket

Removal





1. Remove/disconnect:
a. Wheel
b. Stabilizer link (anti-roll link) from suspension strut
c. ABS sensor from steering knuckle (stub axle carrier).
d. Unclip ABS sensor wire from suspension strut and brake line bracket.

NOTE: Do not open connector. Install support under control arm. Support must be used to limit deflection of driveshaft universal joints.





2. Remove nuts (three) securing suspension strut mounting to body.





3. Remove bolts (two) securing suspension strut to steering knuckle (stub axle carrier). Remove strut





4. Mount strut in vise as illustrated.
a. Relieve load on spring seats with clamps. Position clamps opposite each other and tighten alternately to relieve load on seats.
b. Remove strut mounting nut and washer. Use socket and counterhold.





5. Remove shock absorber retaining nut. Use socket and counterhold.
6. Remove.
- Spring seat
- Rubber bumper and gaiter
- Spring
- ABS wire bracket.





7. Inspect spring, strut mounting, spring seat, boot (gaiter) and bumper to ensure components are undamaged





8. Compress new spring to length of approx. 300 mm (11.81 inch). Use spring clamps.

Installation





1. Assemble mount on shock absorber:
a. Bumper and gaiter
b. Washer (when replacing shock absorber, replace existing stop washer with 3 mm ( 0.19 inch) washer).
c. Spring compressed to length of approx. 300 mm (11.81 inch).
d. Spring seat.
e. Fit spring ends in spring seats.
2. Install retaining nut. Tighten to 70 Nm (52 ft. lbs.). Use socket and counterhold.





3. Install:
- Suspension strut mounting
- Washer and nut. Tighten nut to 70 Nm (52 ft. lbs.). Use socket and counterhold.





4. Remove spring clamps. Install suspension strut in body with new nuts Tighten strut mounting nuts (three) to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).





5. Two sleeves, P/N 9153007-1, must be installed in the steering knuckle bolt holes as illustrated when replacing shock absorbers on cars with the later steering knuckle. This is to eliminate play between bolt and hole and ensure that the camber is correct.

NOTE: The bolts may be tight in the sleeves.





6. Attach suspension strut to steering knuckle (stub axle carrier). Use new bolts and nuts. Tighten to 65 Nm (48 ft. lbs.) and through further 90°.





7. Transfer existing bracket to new shock absorber





8. Attach stabilizer link (anti-roll link) to suspension strut with new nut.
9. Attach ABS sensor wire to strut and brake pipe bracket
10. Secure ABS wire. Clip excess length of ABS wire (if any) on driver's side of engine compartment to brake power booster (brake servo) vacuum hose. Clip excess length on passenger side to wiring duct at suspension strut tower.
11. Remove support.
12. Mount wheel. Lubricate wheel locating pin on hub with anti-rust agent, P/N 1161030-0. Tighten studs lightly, then tighten in diagonal order to (110 Nm 981 ft. lbs.).
