Replacement of Sips Bag In Front Seat
SIPS Bag Released Or Maintenance ReplacementWARNING: The SIPS bag cannot be repaired. The SIPS bag is always replaced as a complete unit, consisting of sensor unit, firing circuit and cushion module.
CAUTION: When reupholstering seat back, use only Volvo original or Volvo approved seat upholstery for SIPS bag.
Removal

If SIPS bag was not released:
First lock SIPS bag!
- Lift up the seat pocket. Lift the front edge and push pocket backward.
- Remove transport safety device from its holder inside the seat pocket.
- Attach transport safety device to sensor unit.
Remove front seat
- Turn ignition off.
- Disconnect cable from negative battery terminal.

Remove:
- Seat pocket (A). Lift the front edge and push backward.
- Seat belt from chair attachment (bolt on outside of seat).
- Cover (B) at front edge of seat rail.
- 4 attachment bolts (C) in seat rails.
- Disconnect connectors to heating elements (under seat).
- Disconnect connector to seat belt buckle (under seat). Lift seat straight up (control tabs at front and rear edge).
Remove upholstery from seat back
- Disconnect seat back from bottom cushion (3 screws on either side of seat).
- Remove seat-back angle-adjustment knob (2). (Knob is on the outer side of the seat.)
- Remove lumbar-support adjustment knob(1). Unscrew counterclockwise until it stops. Continue to unscrew counterclockwise while pulling out firmly. (Knob is on the inner of the seat.)
- Remove clamps (using cutting pliers) from outside of upholstery and inside between upholstery and padding.
- Pry upholstery off.
Remove SIPS bag from seat
Remove firing circuit
Note routing of firing circuit and location of cable ties.
- Cut cable ties (2).
- Free firing circuit from clips.
Remove SIPS bag cushion module
Remove cushion module from seat back frame, following these steps:
- Remove two Torx-25 screws.
- Remove cushion module
Remove sensor unit
Remove sensor unit from forward SIPS tube, following these steps:
- Remove Torx-25 screw.
- Remove pressure plate.
- Remove sensor unit.
- Leave clips in SIPS tube sensor housing.
Remove SIPS bag from seat
- Remove entire SIPS bag (i.e. sensor unit, firing circuit and cushion module) from seat.
Installation
Install SIPS bag in seat
Make sure that the new SIPS bag is locked with transport safety device attached to sensor unit.
Install sensor unit
- Install sensor unit on forward SIPS tube.
- Clips should be in place in SIPS tube sensor housing.
- Install sensor unit.
- Install pressure plate
- If collision repair, install new plate
- If maintenance replacement, re-use old plate.
- Install Torx-25 screw.
Install SIPS bag cushion module
Install cushion module on seat back frame:
- Install cushion module.
- Install 2 Torx-25 screws.
If SIPS bag was released, the attachment screws for the cushion module should be replaced. Use new screws of the same type and quality.
Tightening torque for cushion module 2.9 Nm (2.14 ft.lb.)
Install firing circuit
Install firing circuit and cable ties in previous location:
- Place firing circuit in clips.
- Install cable ties (2).
Install seat-back upholstery
- Install upholstery in reverse order of removal.
Begin by attaching clamps in middle of seat back between upholstery and padding.
Use special pliers, part no. 1158962-9, to attach clamps.
CAUTION: When reupholstering seat back, use only Volvo original or Volvo-approved seat upholstery for SIPS bag.

Install front seat
- Install seat in opposite order of removal.
NOTE: The outside rear attachment bolt (C) should be tightened last, otherwise the seat could be installed at an angle.
After collision, replace seat pocket.
Tightening torques:
- Seat/floor: 40 Nm (30 ft.lb.)
- Belt: 20 Nm (15 ft.lb.)
When front seat is in place Do not forget to unlock SIPS bag!
- Remove transport safety device from sensor unit.
- Place transport safety device in holder inside seal pocket.
- Replace seat pocket.
- Change to decal with new date for SIPS bag, left or right side. Located at driver's side B-post.
The new SIPS-bag chair comes with the decal.
