Vertical Acceleration Sensor: Description and Operation

ACCELERATION SENSOR

The acceleration sensor is installed only in cars produced for certain markets.

The device consists of a piezoelectric vibration pickup which detects vertical acceleration of the car, for example on a bumpy road. These irregularities may cause uneven engine running.

The ECM uses the sensor signals to distinguish such irregularities from genuine misfires.

The sensor receives a 5 Volt supply from the ECM. The output signal is 2.5 Volts when the car is at rest. If vertical movements are present, the signal will oscillate about 2.5 Volts, the deviation increasing with amplitude.
