Turbocharger: Testing and Inspection

TURBOCHARGER QUICK CHECK





Turn off engine
^ Listen to the Turbocharger (TC) as the engine stops.
^ Normally the moving parts of the TC will stop a little after the engine.





If this does not happen:
^ Remove inlet hose from compressor housing.
^ Check that:
- Turbine rotates.
- Axial and radial play feels normal.
- Turbine is not scraping the compressor housing.

Turbocharger Replacement
^ Turbochargers have sometimes been replaced unnecessarily because play has been established during checks (the shaft floats on an oil film).
^ Before replacing a TC check play to ascertain whether bearings are worn.
^ If the TC is to be replaced:
- Plug all connections on the old TC before sending it off.
