- Ignition was on or engine running while the fuel tank was being filled.

When filling the tank with the ignition on or engine running it will take a very long time before the fuel gauge registers the correct fuel level because there is a delay integrated in the system The fuel gauge will indicate the correct fuel level when the ignition is turned off and then on again.
