Replacing components. VDO Combined instrument panel

Note! In cars without an (SRS) passenger module start with Combined instrument panel:Removing of dashboard vents

Preparations

- Make a note of radio code if anti-theft coded radio is installed.
- Ignition off.
- Disconnect the battery negative lead.

Removing glove compartment

- Fold down glove compartment lid.



- Remove arms (x 2) from the glove compartment lid. Insert a small screwdriver between arm and lid, and prize out arm.
- Remove glove compartment insert (6 x Torx 25).

Removing connector from passenger module

Warning! The battery should not be connected when SRS ignition cable igniter connector is removed or installed.




- Remove SRS ignition cable igniter connector from the underside of the passenger module.

Warning! Under no circumstances use an ohmmeter or other live measuring instrument to take readings on a disconnected non-deployed airbag module. This could deploy the airbag!

Removing screw from passenger module mounting




- Remove screws (4 x Torx 10 mm (4 x 0.4 in)) from passenger module mounting. The screws are located on top of the glove compartment.

Removing of dashboard vents




- Remove blind cover plugs, screws (2 x Torx 25) and right and left side defroster vents. See (1) in the illustration which shows the left-hand side.




- Driver's side dashboard vent side defroster
- the two center dashboard vents.

When removing dashboard vents. Twist vents downwards and pull out, or carefully prize with a screwdriver at the side and pull out.

Removing loudspeakers

- left and right loudspeaker grilles.



- plastic plugs (2) from left and right loudspeakers. Press the center of the plastic plug to loosen it before removing.
- left and right loudspeakers.
- connectors from left and right loudspeakers.



- right loudspeaker screws (Torx 25). See (2) in figure.

Removing cover (with passenger module)




Remove mounting screws (9 x Torx 25) from the as cover as follows.

- screws (x 2) at each A-pillar
- screws (x 2) above combined instrument panel.
- screw (x 3) above the left and center dashboard vents.
- screws (x 2) above the glove compartment. If the car has no passenger module there are 3 screws.

Pull cover (with passenger module) back to release it from its guide by the center dashboard vents. Carefully lift away the cover (with passenger module).

Caution! If a non-deployed passenger module is removed temporarily, it should be placed with the metal side (rear) downwards in a protected place.

Note! In cars with an (SRS) passenger module, connect the battery negative lead.

Removing/replacing combined instrument panel




Note! Read off the data from the control module before replacing the printed circuit board or combined instrument panel.

- Disconnect two combined instrument panel connectors.
- Disconnect vacuum hose to boost pressure gauge. This is located at the back of the boost pressure gauge.
- Release the two catches at the top and lift up the instrument slightly exposing the trip computer connector if the car has a trip computer.
- Lift out combined instrument panel.

Replacing combined instrument panel components




Note! When working on the combined instrument panel observe the following: Cleanliness: the workplace must be free of dust, dirt, oil and solvent.

- Always wash your hands before disassembling the combined instrument panel.
- Do not use handcream or lotion after washing. Use protective gloves of thin cotton. Synthetic materials can cause static electricity.
- Do not expose the printed circuit board to static electricity.
- Do not touch printed circuit board or dial surfaces.



- Do not change the position of needles. They are factory calibrated. If the needles are moved the instrument may display the wrong reading.

Replacing bulb

All warning lamps in the combined instrument panel should light when the ignition is switched on. Indicator lamps should light when the relevant function is activated. Replace the bulb if lamps do not light.

Removing trip computer module




- Remove time/temperature/trip computer module locates at the bottom in the middle. Disconnect connector and remove the two screws.

Removing combined instrument panel cover




- Remove rear combined instrument panel cover. Undo the 11 screws marked A and three screws marked B.
- Remove boost pressure gauge nut on turbocharger (TC) variants.

The screws marked B secure the odometer to the base plate.

Removing combined instrument panel printed circuit board




- Lift the printed circuit board away from the base plate. The printed circuit board is pressed into the base plate and must be removed carefully.
- Remove shims for lamps.

Replacing fuse




- Replacing fuse. The fuse should be installed on the outside of the printed circuit board. The arrows in the illustration point to two screw holes for the new fuse.

Hint: Use the replacement part fuse set P/N 912 8110-5.

The fuse may have blown because of an external short-circuit.

Removing combined instrument panel base plate




- Remove the instrument housing from the base plate. Remove screws (nine)

Replacing instrument panel

- Lift out instrument panel




Note! Do not touch the instrument panel or needles.

Removing odometer




- Remove odometer with reset button.
- To replace the reset button pull it straight out of the odometer.

Replacing dial faces




- Carefully remove the dial faces which are located on two plastic pins in the instrument housing.
- Replace and install the new dial faces.

Assembling combined instrument panel




- Position odometer on the base plate.

Installing instrument panel




- Position instrument panel on the base plate.
- Ensure that the reset button is properly located in the instrument panel and that the instrument panel is correctly positioned on the base plate. Press together.

Assembling base plate and instrument housing




- Assemble base plate and instrument housing.



- Install nine screws.

Installing printed circuit board




- Install shims for lamps.
- Install printed circuit board by carefully pressing on the bulb holders to press in the terminal pins.

Note! Ensure that terminal pins are correctly positioned.

Installing cover




- Position cover and screw together combined instrument panel with screws A and B as illustrated (11 + 3).
- Screw boost pressure gauge nut into place.

Installing trip computer module




- Position time/temperature/trip computer module, screw into place with the two screws and connect connector.

Installing combined instrument panel




- Connect trip computer connector if the car has a trip computer.
- Install combined instrument panel.
- Connect vacuum hose to boost pressure gauge.

Note! If the customer wants the combined instrument panel sealed so that the odometer cannot be tampered with, install contact protector P/N 912 88113 onto the 30-pin connector.

Cars with an (SRS) passenger module:

- Disconnect the battery negative lead.

Note! After replacing the printed circuit board or combined instrument panel the new control module must be programmed.

Installing cover (with passenger module)

- Install cover (with passenger module).




Install mounting screws (9 x Torx 25) to the cover as follows.

- screws (x 2) at each A-pillar
- screws (x 2) above combined instrument panel.
- screw (x 3) above the left and center dashboard vents.
- screws (2) above the glove compartment. If the car is not equipped with a passenger module there are three screws.

Installing loudspeakers

- Left and right loudspeaker connectors.
- Left and right loudspeakers.
- Plastic plugs (2) to left and right loudspeakers.



- Right loudspeaker screws (Torx 25). See (2) in figure.
- Left and right loudspeaker grilles.

Installing loudspeakers




- The two center dashboard vents.
- Driver's side dashboard vent side defroster.
- Right and left side defroster vents, screws (2 x Torx 25) and blind cover plugs.

Installing passenger module mounting screws

- Install passenger module mounting screws (4 x 10 mm (4 x 0.4 in)). The screws are located on top of the glove compartment. Passenger module tightening torque = 7 Nm (5.2 ft.lb).

Connecting connector to passenger module




- SRS ignition cable igniter connector to the underside of the passenger module.

Installing glove compartment




- Glove compartment insert (6 x Torx 25).
- Arms (x 2) to glove compartment lid.

Final check

Warning! Ensure that nobody is in the car when the battery is being connected.

When all components have been reinstalled

- Switch ignition to position II.
- Connect battery negative lead.
