Timing Belt: Application and ID

These engines may have a 21mm wide timing belt or a 23mm wide timing belt depending on whether or not the timing belt upgrade has been completed. If the engine is still equipped with a 21mm wide timing belt it is recommended that the timing belt upgrade be performed and the 23mm belt be used.

1994 --> on B5254 and B5234

The camshaft drive has been modified in many ways in order to raise the interval between replacements. The cam belt has been replaced by a new 23mm wide belt. It has red markings and is longer than previously, as the diameters of the tensioner reel and the idler pulley have been increased. Modifications have also been made to the belt-drive on the water pump, oil pump and tensioner-damper element. The new cam belt covers are wider and have been supplied with labels indicating the replacement interval. The new 23mm belt was introduced just before the 1994 model change.
