CI-143 48 Pulse Vehicle Speed Signal

Condition:

Speedometer:

- The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is stored within 2 seconds when there is a short-circuit to ground in the signal and speed is > 2 km/h (1.2 mph).

Possible Source:
Short-circuit to ground in vehicle speed output signal cable between combined instrument panel and
- ECC
- Trip computer.

Fault Symptom(s):

NOTE: The combined instrument panel displays no visible symptoms of this diagnostic trouble code (DTC).

- In cars with ECC blower fan speed does not drop with increasing speed.
- In cars equipped with a trip computer, incorrect values for average speed, average fuel consumption, actual fuel consumption and trip computer trip odometer are displayed.

Start fault-tracing at step 1, below.

1) Status Check:

Ignition On:

- Ignition on.

- Read off diagnostic trouble code (DTC) counter and note value.

- Is counter value greater than 0?

Yes: Go to step 5, below.
No: Go to step 2, below.

2) Checking for a Short-Circuit to Ground:

- Check cable to combined instrument panel # D8 for a short-circuit to ground.
- On cars with ECC, check cable between combined instrument panel # A6 and ECC control module # A24 for a short-circuit to ground.
- To perform above stated checks, Permanent Fault
- Then continue with step 3, below.

3) Verification:

Note: After carrying out the repair check that the fault has been remedied.

- Ignition off.

Connect Connector:

- Reconnect connectors, reinstall components.

- Test drive the car at speeds above 20 km/h (12 mph), or lift up the front suspension and remove both front wheels.

WARNING: Test drive cars with AWD at a speed above 20 km/h (12 mph), or lift up the front and rear suspension and remove all wheels.

NOTE:
- When the rear wheels are stationary and the front wheels rotate, diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) may be stored in the ABS system. Erase any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) stored in the ABS system after fault-tracing.
- Ensure that the front wheels are not rotating when the gear selector is moved.

- Ignition off.

Ignition On:

- Ignition on.

- Read off the diagnostic trouble code (DTC) counters.
- Is counter value greater than 0?

Yes: Fault is corrected.
No: Go to step 4, below.

4) Fault-Tracing Information:
- The verification result shows that the fault persists.
- Do you want to quit fault-tracing?

Yes: Fault not corrected.
No: Start over at step 1, above.

5) Faulty Signal, Intermittent Fault:

- Check cable to combined instrument panel # D8 for an intermittent short-circuit to ground.
- On cars with ECC, check cable between combined instrument panel # A6 and ECC control module # A24 for an intermittent short-circuit to ground.
- To perform above stated checks, Intermittent Fault
- Then continue with step 6, below.

6) Fault-Tracing Information:
- For intermittent faults fault-tracing is not followed by a verification because the fault is not present at this moment.
- If you want to repeat fault-tracing, start over again at step 1, above.
