Refilling

Filling (charging) car with refrigerant

NOTE: If the RHS 850 unit needs filling with R134a from an external gas cylinder, this should be done via the upper HP connection (9). This can be done at the same time as draining the car's A/C system via the low-pressure connection.

- Check how much refrigerant to put in A/C system: see instructions below. Also check that there is enough refrigerant in the unit tank.
- Use the rubber ring on the unit sight gauge (13) to indicate how much refrigerant to put in the A/C system. To allow for the internal piping in the unit and the filler hose between the unit and the car's filler nipple, you will need to add 50 cc to the amount measured on the sight gauge when filling. In "recovery", there may be more than 50 cc in the sight gauge. This is normal as it includes gas from the unit's condenser.
- Set switch (2) to CHARGING. The upper cock (7) must be closed, the lower one (8) open. Now watch the level in the unit sight gauge (13). Shut the cock (8) once the marker level has been reached.
- Shut off connection to car. This means the valve is released to prevent it tripping the Schrader valve in the car - otherwise the system would drain.
- Turn switch (2) to RECOVERY position
- Open recovery cock (7) once more. Wait until light (4) goes out. Hose is now empty of refrigerant.
- Shut cock (7).
- Set switch (2) to TEST

NOTE Run a leak check as well using a leak detector on connections where components have been replaced.

A/C system refrigerant capacity:

- How much refrigerant to use depends on the type of condenser the car is fitted with. There are two types, designed for:
- Cold markets; i.e. countries with "cold" climates, the recommended amount is 825 g.
- Hot markets & USA/CAN; i.e. countries with "hot" climates, the recommended amount is 750 g.
- How much refrigerant to put in the A/C system is shown on a plate in the engine compartment, located close to the top-up valve.
- If there is any doubt as to whether a car is equipped for a hot or cold climate, look at the pipe connections on the top right-hand side of the condenser (Image).
- Cold climate condensers (on the left of the Image) have a pipe connection which runs down in loops on the outside of the condenser's right-hand side.
- Hot climate condensers (on the right of the Image) have a pipe connection which runs down parallel with the condenser's right-hand side.

Filling the collector bottle:
Use only if draining a number of cars without refilling.

NOTE! Use only approved containers (bottles). Do not over-fill. Fill only to 80% of indicated capacity to give gas room to expand when warm.

Preparations:
- Connect equipment to grounded socket.
- Set "MAIN SWITCH" (1) to on.
Settings:
- Connect red hose in output (9) from unit to gas container.
- Cock (7) must be closed.
- Open cock (8) on unit and cock on collector.
Draining:
- Set switch (2) to CHARGING.
- The unit will now drain the cylinder to the collector bottle automatically.
- Once draining is complete, shut the cock on the collector bottle.
- Set switch (2) to RECOVER.
- Shut cock (8) and open cock (7).
- The hose will now drain automatically.
