Front Output Flange and Seal
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Puller (T10055)
• Assembly Tool (T10399)
• Thrust Piece (T10449)
• Used Oil Collecting and Extracting Device (V.A.G 1782)
• Sealing Grease for Seal (G 052 128 A1)
• Screw, approximately 4 mm in diameter
Removing
- Remove the noise insulation.
- Remove the front driveshaft. Refer to => [ Front Driveshaft ] Front Driveshaft.
- Place the used oil collecting and extracting device (V.A.G 1782) under the transfer case.
- Remove the drain plug - 2 - and drain the gear oil.
- Reinstall the drain plug using liquid locking fluid (AMV 185 101 A1). Refer to => [ Tightening Specification ] Service and Repair, for the tightening specification.
- Remove the dust cap - A - using a pry bar - B -.
Always replace the dust cap.
- Make a hole in the center of the shaft seal using a drift.
- Screw in a 4 mm diameter screw - arrow -.
• Do not damage the sealing surface on the input shaft when doing so.
• Be careful not to install the screw too deep, otherwise the bearing underneath will get damaged.
- Remove the seal using the puller (T10055) and adapter (T10055/2).
Installing
Installation is performed in the reverse order of removal while observing the following:
- Lightly coat the outer circumference of the new shaft seal with oil.
- Fill the space between the sealing and dust lips half way with sealing grease for seal (G 052 128 A1).
- Install the new shaft seal using the thrust piece (T10449). Be careful not to tilt it.
- Install the new dust cap - A - on the shaft until it lock using the assembly tool (T10399).
- Replace the O-ring - A - and the circlip - B -.
- Install the front driveshaft. Refer to => [ Front Driveshaft ] Front Driveshaft.
- Fill the transfer case with oil and check the level. Refer to => [ Transfer Case Fluid Level, Checking ] Service and Repair.
