Wheel Bearing, for 17" Suspension
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Hydraulic Press (VAS 6178) with pressure head (T10205/13)
• Engine/Gearbox Jack (V.A.G 1383 A)
• Separating Tool (3 - Kukko 15/3)
• Assembly Tool (T10205)
• Pneumatic/Hydraulic Foot Pump (VAS 6179)
• Assembly Tool (T10356)
Removing
- Remove drive axle. Refer to => [ Drive Axle ] Drive Axle.
- Install upper control arm on wheel bearing housing.
- Remove brake caliper and engage on body with wire.
- Remove brake disc and backing plate.
- Remove ABS wheel speed sensor.
Wheel Hub, Pulling Out
- Secure the gripping pieces (T10205/1) - 1 - with the wheel bolts - 2 - to the wheel hub.
The wheel bolts - 2 - must not protrude on the back side of the (T10205/1) - arrow -.
- Mount the tools as illustrated.

• Before pressing out, place the (V.A.G 1383 A) with the universal mount under the cylinder since the cylinder may fall down at the end of the pressing out procedure.
• Hold the (VAS 6178) during the pressing-out procedure.
- Pull out wheel hub, hold tool securely.
Wheel Bearing, Pulling Out
- Remove securing ring.
- Mount the tools as illustrated.
• Offset of thrust piece (T10205/6) must point toward rear final drive.

5. Wheel hub support (T10205/4)
6. Thrust plate (T10356/4)
7. Nut (T10205/8-2)

- Pull out wheel bearing while holding device securely.
Pulling Bearing Inner Race Off Wheel Hub
- Install separating tool behind bearing inner ring.
• Beveled parts of blades face bearing inner ring.

5. Thrust piece (T10205/3)
6. Nut (T10205/8-2)
7. Spindle (T10205/8-1)
When pulling off, hold tool so that bearing inner ring points downward (danger of accident if bearing inner ring jumps off at end of pulling process).
- Pull off wheel hub from bearing inner ring.
Wheel Bearing, Pressing In
- Make sure that the rubberized ABS sensor ring - arrow - faces the final drive.
• If no rubberized ring is visible, check for example with a paper clip, which of the two sides is magnetic. This side must face rear final drive when installed.
- Mount the tools as illustrated.
• Offset of thrust piece (T10205/9) must point toward wheel bearing housing.

- Press wheel bearing in until stop.
- Install circlip.
Wheel Hub, Pressing In
- Mount the tools as illustrated.
• The shoulder of the (T10205/9) must point toward the final drive.

- Press in wheel hub until stop.
Installing
Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:
- Install the drive axle. Refer to => [ Drive Axle ] Drive Axle.
- Install the brake disk and cover plate.
- Install brake caliper.
