Starter
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Torque Wrench (V.A.G 1331/)
• Torque Wrench (V.A.G 1332/)
When disconnecting battery, procedure must always be followed as described in the repair information. Refer to => [ Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting ] Service and Repair. Not adhering to sequence will result in the deactivation of Main Battery Switch -E74- and subsequent damage to electrical system components.
Removal
- Disconnect battery. Refer to => [ Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting ] Service and Repair.
- Remove the noise insulation.
- Open the snap buttons - arrows - and remove the heat shield mat from the solenoid switch.
The threaded connection on the solenoid switch can twist.
The solenoid switch can be damaged.
Counterhold the threaded connection on the solenoid switch using an open-end wrench when disconnect and connecting the positive wire.
- Disconnect the terminal 50 connector - 1 -.
- Pry off the cap and remove the nut - arrow -.
- Disconnect the positive cable - 3 - from the solenoid switch.
- Remove the bottom bolt - arrow -.
- Remove the upper bolt - arrow -.
• The bolt on the top of the starter is accessible by reaching between the primary catalytic converter exhaust pipes.
- Remove the starter from the vehicle.
Installation
Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:
- Tighten the threaded connections to the tightening specification given in the overview. Refer to => [ Starter Overview ] Service and Repair.
