Shift Interlock Switch: Service and Repair
Transmission Park Selector Switch (F305)
The transmission park selector switch is comprised of 2 micro-switches. The 2 micro-switches create the signal that the electronic ignition key removal lock needs to release the key only when the selector lever is in the "P" position.
The first micro-switch is closed when the shift lock solenoid is not operated in the selector lever "P" position (when the brake pedal is not operated). The selector lever emergency release is not activated.
The second micro-switch is closed when the button in the selector lever knob is not actuated in the selector lever "P" position.
The following points must be observed before replacing the transmission park selector switch:
1. Both micro-switches are electrically connected in series and the switches are closed. The key can be removed. Check the micro-switch using "Guided Fault Finding" in the vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system (VAS 5051B). After the vehicle system test is performed, select the test program transmission park selector switch via component selection.
2. An electrical test on the micro-switch is also possible. If a continuity test is performed with a multi-meter, note that in this case, there is a resistance value of approximately 470 Ohms when both switches are closed.
Removing
- Remove the selector mechanism. Refer to => [ Selector Mechanism ] Selector Mechanism.
- Unclip and remove the guide - 1 - for the emergency release lever in the - direction of the arrow -.
- Unhook the electrical wire from the selector mechanism - arrows A -.
- Release the connector - D - and disconnect it from the shift lock solenoid.
- Release the connector - E - and remove it in an upward direction.
- Press the tab - C - in the direction of - arrow 1 -.
- Remove the micro-switch - B - in the direction of - arrow 2 -.
• The transmission park selector switch is made up of 2 micro-switches. Micro-switch - B - is one of the two. The two micro-switches create the signal that the electronic ignition key removal lock needs to release the key only when the selector lever is in the "P" position.
- Pry up both bearing shells - 1 - using a screwdriver.
- Pull out the retainer plate - 2 - in a downward direction.
- Pry out both lower bearings - 1 - using a screwdriver.
- Carefully pull out part of the shift gate - 1 - in a downward direction.
- If necessary, press the emergency release lever - arrow - down so that the shift gate can be removed.
- Pry out the pin - A - using a screwdriver.
- Remove the micro-switch - B -.
• The transmission park selector switch is made up of 2 micro-switches. Micro-switch - B - is one of the two. The two micro-switches create the signal that the electronic ignition key removal lock needs to release the key only when the selector lever is in the "P" position.
- Detach the electrical wire from the tab - arrow C - and pull the micro-switch out of the circuit.
Installing
Installation is performed in the reverse order, paying attention to the following:
• Lubricate the bearings and the sliding surfaces with poly lubricant (G 052 142 A2).
- Check stop buffer - 1 - for proper seating.
- Install the shift gate - 1 - from underneath.
• Shift gate selector lever in the "S" position (as illustrated).
- Insert the micro-switch - B - in the shift gate and secure with the pin - A -.
• The micro-switch must lie flush on all sides.
- Insert the electrical wire in the tab - arrow C -.
- Push both axial bearings - 2 - onto the shift gate - 1 -.
- Install both shift bearings - 3 - on the shift gate.
- Slide the shift gate into the selector mechanism housing. If necessary, push the emergency release lever - arrow - down to make it possible to install the shift gate.
- Press in the lower bearings - 1 - on both sides.
• The lower bearings - 1 - must engage in the shift bearing bushings - arrow - - A -.
- Press the new retainer plate - 2 - onto the rear axial bearing.
• Installed position: The angled end of the plate faces the shift gate.
- Install both bearing shells - 1 -.
- Attach the electrical wire - arrows A - to the selector mechanism according to the figure.
- Install the micro-switch - B -.
• The micro-switch must lie flush on all sides.
- Connect the connector - D - to the shift lock solenoid.
- Clip in connector - E - from above.
• The ignition key removal lock does not function correctly if the micro-switch is not inserted correctly or properly secured.
- Install the guide - 1 - for the emergency release lever opposite the - direction of the arrow -.
- Install the selector mechanism. Refer to => [ Selector Mechanism ] Selector Mechanism.
