Driver Airbag
• The screwdriver mentioned in the following should be about 175 mm long and have a blade width of 7 mm.
Removing
• The general safety precautions for working on airbag, belt tensioner and battery cut-out units (pyrotechnic components) must be observed. • Observe the special information regarding driver and front passenger airbags. Refer to => [ Airbag, Belt Tensioner and Battery Cut-Out Units General Safety Precautions ] Airbag, Belt Tensioner and Battery Cut-Out Units General Safety Precautions.
- Adjust steering wheel height to the lowest position.
- Adjust the steering wheel depth so that it is in the fully extended position.
- Turn the steering wheel to the position shown in the figure.
- Insert a screwdriver into the hole on the rear side of the steering wheel to the stop (approx. 8 mm).
- Turn the screwdriver in the direction of the driver door - arrow -. This releases the airbag latch on the right steering wheel side.
- After the latch is released, pull the airbag unit on the upper edge out of the steering wheel bezel.
- Turn the steering wheel 180° and disengage the airbag unit latching mechanism on the left side of the steering wheel as described.
- After the latch is released, pull the airbag unit again on the upper edge out of the steering wheel bezel.
- Turn the steering wheel back 90° to the center position.
- Switch the ignition on.
- Disconnect the vehicle battery.
- Turn the steering wheel back 90° to the center position.
- Detach the airbag unit from the steering wheel.
Electrostatic discharges can lead to unintended deployment of the airbag. Therefore, the technician must discharge static electricity from the body before disconnecting the ignition and ground wiring. This is done, for example, by briefly touching the vehicle body or the door striker pin.
- Release the connector lock in the- direction of the arrow - and remove the airbag connector - 1 -.
- Disconnect the harness connector in the area of the "6 o'clock steering wheel spoke".
Installation
- Insert the airbag connector - 1 - in the connector coupling. The airbag connector must engage audibly.
• The airbag connector must be connected from above! The cables must not rest on the vibration damper!
- Connect the harness connector in the area of the "6 o'clock steering wheel spoke".
- Press the airbag unit into the steering wheel.
- Check whether the airbag unit is engaged on the left and right side of the steering wheel.
- Switch the ignition on.
Make sure that no persons are in the vehicle.
- Connect the vehicle battery.
