Engine, Installing

Engine, Installing

When guiding the engine/transmission assembly into the body, bring the subframe into contact with the body using the scissor lift table. "Pulling" the subframe up by the bolts can damage the threaded inserts.

- Reconnect all lines, hoses and electrical connections that were disconnected during the removal procedure.

Install in the reverse order of removal. Note the following:

Tightening specifications.

- Make sure the alignment sleeves for centering the engine/transmission are installed inside the cylinder block. Install them if necessary.

Torque Converter Centering Bushing

- Check the installed dimension of the torque converter.

- Check whether the bushing - arrow - is inserted in the rear of the crankshaft. Drive in the bushing if necessary.

- Before guiding the engine and transmission together, rotate torque converter and drive plate so that the holes are aligned with the starter opening - arrows -.

Risk of destroying the transmission due to a torque converter inserted incorrectly.

Keep checking whether the torque converter behind the drive plate can be turned before and during tightening of the bolts at engine/transmission connection.

If the torque converter cannot be rotated, the ATF pump coupling plate and therefore the transmission are destroyed when connections are tightened to the final torque.

- To secure the torque converter to the drive plate, use new original ribbed bolts. Refer to the Parts Catalog.

- Bolt the transmission to the engine.

- Raise the engine/transmission subassembly using the scissor lift table just enough until dimension - a - between the subframe and the body is reached.

- a - = minimum 250 mm

- Install the selector lever cable and check the adjustment.

- Continue raising the engine/transmission subassembly with the subframe using the scissor lift table.

- When removing, align the subframe, engine carrier and transfer case carrier using locating pins, or align the marks you made on the longitudinal supports.

- Swap out the locating pins one after the other for new subframe bolts and tighten them to specification.

- Install and tighten the new engine mount bracket bolts. Tightening specification, refer to => [ Engine Carrier, Engine Mount and Bracket Overview ] Engine Carrier, Engine Mount and Bracket Overview.

- Install and tighten the new transfer case carrier bolts.

Risk of accident due to loose connections.

If the bolts for the subframe are not tightened to their final torque, the vehicle must not be driven.

- Top off the transmission fluid level.

- Electrical connections and routing.

- Connect the Air Conditioning (A/C) lines to the compressor.

- Fill the power steering system with fluid and bleed the system.

- Install the noise insulation.

- Fill the coolant. Refer to => [ Coolant, Filling ] Coolant, Filling.

Observe the safety precautions that apply to road tests. Refer to => [ Safety Precautions ] Diesel Fuel Injection.

- Perform a road test and then check all the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) memories. Refer to the vehicle diagnostic tester.
