Cooling System: Testing and Inspection






Cooling System, Checking for Leaks

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Procedure

The engine is at operating temperature.

Risk of scalding due to hot steam and hot coolant.

The coolant system is under pressure when the engine is warm.

Reduce pressure by covering the coolant expansion tank cap with a cloth and opening carefully.

- Open the coolant expansion tank cap.

- Install the cooling system tester (V.A.G 1274 B) with the adapter (V.A.G 1274/8) to the coolant expansion tank.






- Generate approximately 1 bar (14.6 psi) pressure using the cooling system tester hand pump.

- If the pressure falls, search for leaks and correct the problem.

- Install the cooling system tester (V.A.G 1274 B) with the adapter (V.A.G 1274/9) to the cap.

- Generate pressure using the cooling system tester hand pump.

The pressure release valve must open at 1.4 to 1.6 bar (20.4 to 23.3 psi).

- If the pressure relief valve does not open as specified, replace the cap.
