Cooling System: Testing and Inspection
Cooling System, Checking for Leaks
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Cooling System Tester (V.A.G 1274 B)
• Adapter (V.A.G 1274/8)
• Adapter (V.A.G 1274/9)
Procedure
• The engine is at operating temperature.
Risk of scalding due to hot steam and hot coolant.
• The coolant system is under pressure when the engine is warm.
• Reduce pressure by covering the coolant expansion tank cap with a cloth and opening carefully.
- Open the coolant expansion tank cap.
- Install the cooling system tester (V.A.G 1274 B) with the adapter (V.A.G 1274/8) to the coolant expansion tank.
- Generate approximately 1 bar (14.6 psi) pressure using the cooling system tester hand pump.
- If the pressure falls, search for leaks and correct the problem.
Pressure Relief Valve in Cap, Checking
- Install the cooling system tester (V.A.G 1274 B) with the adapter (V.A.G 1274/9) to the cap.
- Generate pressure using the cooling system tester hand pump.
• The pressure release valve must open at 1.4 to 1.6 bar (20.4 to 23.3 psi).
- If the pressure relief valve does not open as specified, replace the cap.
