Right Flange Shaft Seal
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Puller (T10055)
• Thrust Piece (T10176)
Removing
- Remove the noise insulation.
- Remove the heat shield, if equipped, from over the right drive axle.
- Remove the right drive axle from the transmission.
- Tie the drive axle as high up as possible. Be careful not to damage the paint on the drive axle.
- Place a drip tray underneath.
- Seal the opening in the transmission for the drive axle with a clean cloth - A -.
- Using a 2 to 4 mm drill bit - B -, carefully drill a hole in the outer metal ring - C - of the seal.
• Grease the drill bit - B - so that the shavings stick to the drill bit.
• Drill only through the metal ring - C - otherwise the transmission will get damaged.
- Install a 4 mm screw - arrow - into the drilled hole in the seal metal ring.
• Be careful not to install the screw too deep otherwise the bearing underneath will get damaged.
• Remove the seal using the puller (T10055) and adapter (T10055/2)
• Remove the cloth and carefully clean the transmission and the opening for the drive axle.
• Metal shavings must not get into the transmission or into the opening for the drive axle, vacuum up any shavings if necessary.
• If only the metal ring of the seal could be removed, carefully pry out remaining the parts of the seal using screwdriver.
Installing
Install in the reverse order of removal. Pay attention to the following:
- Coat the outer circumference and sealing lips of the new seal with Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF).
Installed position:
The open side of seal faces the transmission.
- Install the new seal until seated using the thrust piece (T10177). Do not tilt the seal.
- Install the right drive axle to the transmission.
- Install the heat shield, if equipped, over the right drive axle.
- Check the ATF level and add if necessary. Refer to => [ Automatic Transmission Fluid Level, Checking and Adding ] Automatic Transmission Fluid Level, Checking and Adding.
- Install the noise insulation.
