Transmission Fluid, Draining and Filling

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) (V.A.G 1331)

Hose (approximately 600 mm long, outside diameter 10 mm) with a commercially available funnel.

Preparing

For the correct transmission fluid refer to the Parts Catalog.

- Turn off the ignition and disconnect the battery ground cable.

- Remove the engine cover with air filter.

- Remove the battery and the battery tray.

- Remove the noise insulation.

Clean the transmission.

To drain the transmission fluid, the journal for the shift forks in the transmission must be removed.

To avoid changing the position of the shift forks, for example, by involuntarily operating the shift mechanism, the shift rod must be secured.

Secure the gear shift shaft as follows.





- Push the gear shift shaft down in the - direction of arrow 1 -.

- While pressing the gear shift shaft down, rotate the locking pin - A - in the - direction of arrow 2 - upward and simultaneously press it in until it engages in the gear shift shaft.

Draining

Use a clean container that holds 3 liters with a scale printed on it to catch the transmission fluid.

The gear shift shaft is secured, refer to => [ Secure the gear shift shaft as follows. ].

- Remove the drain plug - arrow 1 - and then the support pin - arrow 2 - and drain the transmission fluid.






- Install the support pin - arrow 2 - with a new O-ring. Tighten the support pin bolt to specification, see - item 7 - in the => [ Transmission Housing and Gear Shift Unit Overview ] Transmission Housing and Gear Shift Unit Overview.

- Install the drain plug - arrow 1 - and tighten it to specification, see - item 15 - in the => [ Transmission Housing and Clutch Housing Overview ] Transmission Housing and Clutch Housing Overview.

- Rotate the locking pin - A - back into its starting position in the - direction of the arrow - so that the gear shift shaft moves freely.






Filling

Add 1.7 liters of fluid to the amount of transmission fluid in the container.

For the correct transmission fluid, refer to the Parts Catalog.

- Disconnect the backup lamp switch connector - arrow - and remove the switch.






- Insert a hose (approximately 600 mm long, outside diameter 10 mm) with a commercially available funnel into the hole backup lamp switch hole (2nd technician) and fill the transmission fluid.

- Install the backup lamp switch and connect the connector- arrow -. Tightening specification, see - item 2 - in the => [ Gear Shift Unit Overview ] Gear Shift Unit Overview.

- Make sure the shift mechanism works correctly. Refer to => [ Selector Mechanism, Checking ] Testing and Inspection.

- Install the battery tray and the battery.

- Install the engine cover with air filter.

- Connect the battery and follow the procedure regarding what to do after connecting the battery.

- Install the noise insulation.
