Automatic Transmission Fluid Level, Checking and Adding

Automatic Transmission Fluid Level, Checking and Adding

Note the following information:

If the Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) is filled, only use ATF available as a replacement part, refer to the Parts Catalog.

Adapter for Oil Filling (VAS 6262/6) must also be used on some fluid containers.

It may be necessary to shorten the pipe on the adapter for oil filling (VAS 6262 A).

Shorten the pipe on the adapter for oil filling (VAS 6262 A) as follows:

- Shorten the pipe to 210 mm - a -. This assures the pipe on the adapter for oil filling (VAS 6262 A) will not touch the bottom of some oil containers.

Dimension - a - is measured starting from the shaft in the cap (green surface) on the adapter for oil filling (VAS 6262 A).

- Cut the pipe using the pipe cutter (VAS 6056/2).

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Torque Wrench (5-50 Nm) (V.A.G 1331)

Used Oil Collecting and Extracting Device (V.A.G 1782)

Vehicle Diagnostic Tester, For example, (VAS 5051)

Drip Tray for VAS 6100 (VAS 6208)

Adapter for Oil Filling (VAS 6262 A)

Adapter for Filling ATF Oil (VAS 6262/2)

Adapter for Oil Filling (VAS 6262/6)

Requirements

The vehicle is level and all hoist arms are the same height.

The noise insulation has been removed.

The vehicle diagnostic tester is connected

The ATF should not be warmer than 45° C (113 °F) when starting the procedure.

Test temperature: 35 - 45 °C (95 - 113 °F)

Checking

- Connect the vehicle diagnostic tester and identify the vehicle in Guided Functions.

- Select check ATF level.

Allow the transmission to cool down if the oil temperature is higher than 45° C (113 °F)

The engine is idling and the selector lever is in the "P" position.

- Place the drip tray for VAS 6100 or the used oil collecting and extracting device (V.A.G 1782) under the transmission near the transmission fluid drain and check plug.

- Remove the transmission fluid drain and check plug - arrow -.

- Always replace the seal - arrow - on the plug.

Even if the fluid level is too low, first a small amount of transmission fluid will leak out of the overflow tube, because it fills during operation.

ATF will leak out of the overflow tube.

- Allow the excess fluid to drain.

- Reinstall the drain plug (with a new seal) as soon as all the fluid has drained out (it starts to drip).

- If no transmission fluid comes out, then fill with fluid.

Adding

- Install the adapter for filling ATF oil (VAS 6262/2) into the plug hole hand tight.

- Connect the adapter for oil filling (VAS 6262 A) to the adapter for filling ATF oil (VAS 6262/2).

- Shake the container before opening.

- Attach the oil container to the adapter for oil filling (VAS 6262 A). Be sure to read the instructions.

- Fill with 1 liter of ATF.

If the ATF leaks out of the plug hole:

The ATF does not need to be topped off.

- Allow the ATF to drain until it drips.

- Install and tighten the plug (with a new seal) to 27 Nm. The ATF level check is now completed.

If no ATF leaks out of the plug hole:

- Add another liter of fluid.

Too little or too much ATF will impair the transmission.
