Front Three-Point Seat Belt

Vehicles without Belt End Fitting

Removing and installing on the left side of the vehicle is described here. Removing and installing on the right side is identical.

Removing

Always read the General Safety Precautions before working on airbags, seat belt tensioners and battery cut-out units (pyrotechnic components. Refer to => [ Pyrotechnic Components Safety Precautions ] Service Precautions.

Refer to the special information regarding seat belt tensioners. Refer to => [ Belt Tensioner Safety Precautions ] Belt Tensioner Safety Precautions.

- Disconnect the battery.

- Remove the sill panel strip. Refer to => [ Sill Panel Strip ] Sill Panel Strip.

- Remove the upper B-pillar trim. Refer to => [ Upper B-Pillar Trim, Loosening and Fastening ] Upper B-Pillar Trim, Loosening and Fastening.

- Remove the B-pillar lower trim. Refer to => [ Lower B-Pillar Trim ] Lower B-Pillar Trim.

- Remove the bolt - 1 - (40 Nm) and the seat belt ring - 2 - from the seat belt height adjuster - 3 -.






- Remove the seat belt relay - 1 - from the B-pillar - 2 - in - direction of arrow -.

- Remove the seat belt - 3 - from the seat belt relay - 1 -.






- Disconnect the connector - 1 - from the automatic belt retractor - 2 -.






- Remove the bolt - 7 - (40 Nm) and then remove the belt end fitting - 6 - from the body.

The screw - 7 - may be micro-encapsulated and must be heated using a hot air gun before loosening. While doing this, protect the neighboring seat belt against excessive heat with a moist towel.

If the screw is micro-encapsulated, it must be replaced every time it is loosened.

Before installing the new bolt, threads on nut must be cleaned, re-cut if necessary.

- Remove the bolt - 2 - (40 Nm) and the automatic belt retractor - 3 - from the B-pillar.






Electrostatic discharges can lead to unintended deployment of the belt tensioner. Therefore, the technician must discharge static electricity from the body before disconnecting the ignition and ground wiring. This is done, for example, by briefly touching the vehicle body or the door striker pin.

Installation

- Note the following when installing:

The centering piece - 1 - on the automatic belt retractors - 3 - is attached to the body.

The guide - 5 - on the belt end fitting - 6 - fits inside the body mount - 4 -. Tighten the bolt - 7 - (40 Nm).

- Install in reverse order of removal.

- Connect the battery.

Removing and installing on the left side of the vehicle is described here. Removing and installing on the right side is identical.

Removing

- Remove the upper B-pillar trim. Refer to => [ Upper B-Pillar Trim, Loosening and Fastening ] Upper B-Pillar Trim, Loosening and Fastening.

- Remove the B-pillar lower trim. Refer to => [ Lower B-Pillar Trim ] Lower B-Pillar Trim.

- Remove the bolt - 1 - (40 Nm) and the seat belt ring - 2 - from the seat belt height adjuster - 3 -.






- Remove the seat belt relay - 1 - from the B-pillar - 2 - in - direction of arrow -.






- Remove the seat belt - 3 - from the seat belt relay - 1 -.

Vehicles with belt end fitting Phase 1, replacement part from April 10, 2011 until December 16, 2011

Electrostatic discharges can lead to unintended deployment of the belt tensioner. Therefore, the technician must discharge static electricity from the body before disconnecting the ignition and ground wiring. This is done, for example, by briefly touching the vehicle body or the door striker pin.

- Disconnect the connector - 1 - from the automatic belt retractor - 4 -.

- Disconnect the connector - 9 - from the belt end fitting - 6 -.

- Remove the bolt - 8 - (8 Nm).

- Remove the bolt - 7 - (40 Nm) and then remove the belt end fittings - 6 - from the body.

The bolt - 7 - is micro-encapsulated. Coat the previously removed components with locking fluid (D 154 000 A1) or with locking fluid (D 154 100 A1) if reusing.

Before installing, the threads on the body - 5 - must be cleaned and cut again if necessary.

- Remove the bolt - 3 - and the automatic belt retractor - 4 - from the mount.






Vehicles with belt end fitting, phase 2, replacement part after December 16, 2011

Electrostatic discharges can lead to unintended deployment of the belt tensioner. Therefore, the technician must discharge static electricity from the body before disconnecting the ignition and ground wiring. This is done, for example, by briefly touching the vehicle body or the door striker pin.

- Disconnect the connector - 1 - from the automatic belt retractor - 4 -.

- Disconnect the connector - 9 - from the belt end fitting - 6 -.

- Remove the bolt - 8 - (8 Nm).

- Remove the bolt - 7 - (40 Nm) and then remove the belt end fitting - 6 - from the body.

Bolt - 7 - is micro-encapsulated and must be replaced after each loosening.

Before installing, the threads on the body - 5 - must be cleaned and cut again if necessary.

- Remove the bolt - 3 - and the automatic belt retractor - 4 - from the mount.






Installation

Vehicles with belt end fitting Phase 1 and Phase 2

- Note the following when installing:

The centering piece - 2 - on the automatic belt retractors - 4 - is attached to the body.

- Install in reverse order of removal.

- Connect the battery.
