Lifter / Lash Adjuster: Testing and Inspection
Hydraulic Lash Adjuster, Checking
• The hydraulic lash adjuster cannot be repaired.
• Irregular valve noises are normal while starting the engine.
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Feeler Gauge
Procedure
- Start the engine and let it run until the coolant fan turns on once.
- Increase the engine speed for about 2 minutes to approximately 2500 RPM, perform a road test if necessary.
• If irregular valve noises disappear but return during short drives, the oil check valve must be replaced. Installed location of the oil check valve: inside the oil filter bracket. Refer to => [ Oil Filter Bracket and Oil Cooler Overview ] Oil Filter Bracket and Oil Cooler Overview.
- If the hydraulic lash adjusters are still loud, determine which one is faulty as follows:
- Remove the cylinder head cover. Refer to => [ Cylinder Head Cover ] Cylinder Head Cover.
- Rotate the crankshaft by the toothed belt gear bolt until the cam lobes on the adjuster that must be checked are at the top.
- To determine the play between the cam lobes and roller rocker arm, press the roller rocker arm down - arrow -.
- If a 0.20 mm feeler gauge can slide between the cam lobes and roller rocker arm, replace the hydraulic lash adjuster.
Final Procedure
- Install the cylinder head cover. Refer to => [ Cylinder Head Cover ] Cylinder Head Cover.
