Passenger Airbag Unit

Advanced Airbag System

The "Advanced Airbag System" refers to an airbag module with two airbag stages which are deployed depending on the severity of the accident. For less severe crashes, the second stage is not deployed.

Airbag modules in which only the first stage has been deployed can cause severe injuries by deployment of the second stage.

Always read the General Safety Precautions before working on airbags, belt tensioners and battery cut-out units (pyrotechnical components). Refer to => [ Seat Belt and Airbag Components, General Safety Precautions ] Seat Belt and Airbag Components, General Safety Precautions.

Note the special instructions for the driver and passenger airbags.

At this time, there is no possibility of checking whether the second stage has been deployed definitively. For this reason, the airbag module must be disposed of in an orderly manner, conforming to national legislation, in its original packaging! Direct questions to your importer!

Disposal of undeployed airbag units as industrial waste/garbage is not permissible!

Removing

Always read the General Safety Precautions before working on airbags, belt tensioners and battery cut-out units (pyrotechnical components). Refer to => [ Seat Belt and Airbag Components, General Safety Precautions ] Seat Belt and Airbag Components, General Safety Precautions.

Note the special instructions for the driver and passenger airbags.

- Disconnect the battery.

- Remove side instrument panel covers. Refer to => [ Side Instrument Panel Covers ] Side Instrument Panel Covers.

- Remove the A-pillar center trim. Refer to => [ Center A-Pillar Trim ] Center A-Pillar Trim.

- Remove the glove compartment. Refer to => [ Glove Compartment ] Glove Compartment.

Electrostatic discharges can lead to unintended deployment of the airbag. Therefore, mechanic must electrostatic discharge him-/herself before disconnecting harness connector. This is done, for example, by briefly grasping the chassis or door striker.

- Disconnect the wiring harness - 1 - from the front passenger airbag unit.

- Remove the screws - 2 - from the bracket - 3 - (9 Nm).

- Remove the screws - 3 - (9 Nm) and the front passenger airbag unit - 4 - from the frame - 2 -.

The front passenger airbag unit brackets - 1 - are clipped to the frame - 2 -.

- Unclip the bracket - 1 - and remove it from the frame - 2 -.

Installation

- Install in reverse order of removal.

If the housing for the front passenger airbag unit - 4 - is plastic, then use locking compound D 197 300 A2 when installing the screws - 3 - (9 Nm).

Check whether an additional ground cable must be routed in the vehicle:

If a passenger airbag is replaced, an additional ground cable must be routed in the vehicle in some cases.

The example shows a single-stage airbag module. For dual-stage airbag modules, the evaluation as to whether an additional ground cable must be routed in the vehicle is done similarly.

- Check whether a ground cable is routed on the passenger airbag housing:

With a passenger airbag with ground line - 1 -, the wiring harness - 2 - is a three-conductor harness, and in addition, another cable - 3 - is secured on the threaded pins - 4 -.

With a passenger airbag without ground line - 5 -, the wiring harness - 6 - is a two-connector harness and no additional cable is secured on the threaded pins - 7 -.

If the front passenger airbag does not have a ground wire, then route an additional ground wire inside the vehicle:

For the following procedure, use a cable (cross section 1 mm, length 600 mm) from the Wiring Harness Repair Set (VAS 1978) or Wiring Harness Repair Set (VAS 1978A).

- Secure end of ground line with bolt - 1 - on right side of passenger airbag.

- Route ground line correctly to right side of passenger footwell.

If necessary, lengthen the ground cable with suitable instruments from the Wiring Harness Repair Set (VAS 1978) or Wiring Harness Repair Set (VAS 1978A).

- Attach the other end of the ground cable to the ground pin - 2 -.

- Turn on the ignition.

Make sure no one is in the vehicle.

- Connect the battery.
