Driver and Passenger Side Curtain Airbags

• Removing and installing on the left side of the vehicle is described here. Removing and installing on the right side is identical.

Removing


• Read the General Safety Precautions for working with airbags, belt tensioners and battery cut-out units. Refer to => [ Seat Belt and Airbag Components, General Safety Precautions ] Seat Belt and Airbag Components, General Safety Precautions.

• Pay attention especially to the instructions for side airbag modules.

- If equipped, open the sunroof.

- Disconnect the battery.

- Remove sun visors. Refer to => [ Sun Visor ] Service and Repair.

- Remove grab handle (roof). Refer to => [ Roof Grab Handles ] Roof Grab Handles.

- Remove the lamps and switches in the headliner.

- Remove the upper trim on the A-pillar. Refer to => [ Upper A-Pillar Trim ] Upper A-Pillar Trim.

- Remove upper trim on the B-pillar. Refer to => [ Upper B-Pillar Trim, Loosening and Fastening ] Upper B-Pillar Trim, Loosening and Fastening.

- Remove the trim on the C-pillar. Refer to => [ C-Pillar Trim ] C-Pillar Trim.


Perform the following work steps especially carefully in order to prevent damage to headliner.

- Lower the headliner (the headliner will not be removed from the vehicle and the front seats and the front passenger door will not be removed). Refer to => [ Headliner - Sedan ] Headliner - Sedan.


Electrostatic discharges can lead to unintended deployment of the airbag. Therefore, mechanic must electrostatically discharge him-/herself before disconnecting harness connectors. This is done, for example, by briefly grasping the chassis or door striker.

- Disconnect the connector - 1 - from the side curtain airbag - 2 -.






- Open the clips - 1 - and loosen the side curtain airbag - 2 - off the body.

- Remove the clips - 4 -.

- Disengage the front and rear straps - 3 - from the body.






- Remove the bolt - 1 - (4.5 Nm).

• Replace the bolt - 1 -.

- Open the clips - 3 - and remove the side curtain airbag - 2 - from the body.

- Remove the clips - 4 -.

- With a second technician, remove the side curtain airbag - 2 - from the vehicle.






Loosen Clips

- Insert a needle nose pliers - 5 - into the openings - 1 - and - 2 - in the clips - 4 -.

- Carefully close the needle nose pliers - arrows -. This will loosen the retainers - 3 - on the clips - 4 -.

- Remove the clips - 4 - from the body.






Installation

- Install in reverse order of removal.

- Turn on the ignition.


Make sure no one is in the vehicle.

- Connect the battery.
