Secondary Air Injection Pump Motor and Relay, Checking
Secondary Air Injection Pump Motor and Relay, Checking
Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required
• Multimeter.
• Wiring diagram.
Test requirements
• The Secondary Air Injection (SAI) Pump Relay (-J299-) fuses OK.
• The Engine Control Module (ECM) Power Supply Relay (J271) fuse OK.
• Battery voltage at least 12.5 V.
• All electrical consumers switched off.
• A/C switched off.
•
Test procedure
- Perform a preliminary check to verify the customers complaint. Refer to => [ Preliminary Check ] Preliminary Check.
Start diagnosis
• The engine MUST be cold (room temperature) in order for the ECM to command the air pump relay ON. The pump runs for approximately 20 seconds. Once the engine has been started, the ECM will not command the pump to run again for approx 6-8 hrs. Due to potential damage to the catalyst, the generic scan tool has no provision for SAI relay control.
Checking operation
- Remove the Secondary Air Injection (SAI) Pump Relay (-J299-).
- Using a jumper, connect Secondary Air Injection (SAI) Pump Relay (-J299-) socket 30 to socket 87.
- The AIR pump should be running.
If the pump does Not operate when using a jumper at the relay:
Connect a test lamp between terminal 30 of the Secondary Air Injection (SAI) Pump Relay (-J299-) socket and ground.
- The test lamp should turn ON.
- If the test lamp did Not turn ON, locate the open circuit between Secondary Air Injection (SAI) Pump Relay (-J299-) socket 30 and Battery positive connection.
If the test lamp was ON:
- Disconnect the Secondary Air Injection (SAI) Pump Motor (-V101-) connector.
- Using a multimeter, check the Secondary Air Injection (SAI) Pump Motor (-V101-) electrical harness connector terminal 2, (which passes through fuse 21 in Fuse Box B) to the Secondary Air Injection (SAI) Pump Relay (-J299-) socket 87 for resistance. Refer to Wiring Diagrams.
Specified value: 1.5 ohms max.
If the specified value was Not obtained:
- Check the circuit for an open, short or high resistance. If necessary, repair the faulty wiring or connection. Replace any open fuse.
If the specified value was obtained:
- Using a multimeter, check the Secondary Air Injection (SAI) Pump Motor (-V101-) electrical harness connector, terminal 1 to ground for resistance.
Specified value: 1.5 ohms max.
If the specified value was Not obtained:
- Repair the open or high resistance in the ground circuit.
If the specified value was obtained:
Replace the Secondary Air Injection (SAI) Pump Motor (-V101-).
If the pump does operate when using a jumper at the relay:
- Install the SAI relay.
- Connect a test lamp to terminal 85 of the Secondary Air Injection (SAI) Pump Relay (-J299-) and ground.
- Turn the ignition On.
- The test lamp should be ON.
- Turn the ignition Off.
- If the test lamp did Not turn on, locate the open circuit between the Secondary Air Injection (SAI) Pump Relay (-J299-) terminal 85 and fuse 8 of Fuse Panel B. Refer to Wiring Diagrams.
- If the test lamp does turn ON, remove the Engine Control Module (ECM) (J623). Refer to the Repair Information.
- Using a multimeter, check the SAI pump relay terminal 86 to the Engine Control Module (ECM) (J623) electrical harness connector T94 terminal 7 for resistance or short. Refer to Wiring Diagrams.
Specified value: 1.5 ohms max.
- If the specified value was not obtained, check for an open, high resistance or short and repair as necessary.
- If the specified value was obtained, exchange the SAI relay with the ECM power supply relay located next to it.
- Attempt to start the engine. If the engine does not start, replace the defective relay.
- Switch the ignition Off.
- If the engine does start, the relay is OK but the ECM is not providing a ground to turn on the SAI relay. Replace the Engine Control Module (ECM) (J623). Refer to the Repair Information.
Final procedures
After the repair work, the following work steps must be performed in the following sequence:
1. Check the DTC memory. Refer to => [ Diagnostic Mode 03 - Read DTC Memory ] Diagnostic Modes 01 - 09.
2. If necessary, erase the DTC memory. Refer to => [ Diagnostic Mode 04 - Erase DTC Memory ] Diagnostic Modes 01 - 09.
3. If the DTC memory was erased, generate readiness code. Refer to => [ Readiness Code ] Monitors, Trips, Drive Cycles and Readiness Codes.
