Rear Final Drive

Rear Final Drive

Short Description

- Prior to removal, print out a diagnostic protocol. Send back the removed final drive with the protocol in the usual manner.

Before lifting the vehicle, remove the two caps in the luggage compartment floor. Remove the final drive/subframe bolts under these caps.

The pendulum support is unbolted from the transmission at the front. The stabilizer bar is removed, the drive axles are disconnected from the final drive. Electrical connections and ventilation lines are disconnected from the final drive.

The rear section of the exhaust system is removed. Disconnect the driveshaft form the final drive and place it on the tunnel brace.

With the help of a second technician, remove the final drive at an angle downward in the direction of travel.

Removing

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items required

Engine-/Gearbox Jack (V.A.G 1383 A)

Counterhold Tool (T10172)

- Raise the floor covering in the luggage compartment.

Depending on the vehicle equipment level:

- Remove the spare tire or the tire mobility tool kit.

- Remove the rubber plugs - arrows - from the luggage compartment floor.

- Remove both bolts.

You must replace these bolts later.

- Lift the vehicle.

- Disconnect the exhaust system at the clamping sleeve - arrows - and remove the rear exhaust system.

- Place the front exhaust pipe on the tunnel brace.

- Remove both drive axles from the rear final drive flange shafts.

- Remove the stabilizer bar.

In order not to damage the left rear level control system sensor:

- Disconnect the harness connector, remove the sensor - 1 - and lay it on the control arm - A -.

- Remove the pendulum support bolts - 1 and 2 -.

- Loosen the driveshaft intermediate bearing bolts - 1 - approximately 2 turns.

So that noises due to imbalance do not occur later:

- See if there are marks (colored dots ) on the driveshaft flexible disc and rear final drive input flange - arrows -. If not, mark the position of the flexible disc and the input flange with respect to one another - arrows -.

- Support the final drive with the engine-/gearbox jack.

- Remove the bolt - arrow - for the front mounting bracket.

You must replace this bolt later.

- Remove the washer - C - on top of the mounting bracket.

- Press the engine and transmission forward by hand and secure this position with a suitable piece of wood - A -.

- Remove the driveshaft flexible disc to input flange bolts - arrows -.

- Counter hold the rear final drive to loosen and tighten the bolts.

- Push the final drive as far as possible to the rear.

- Remove the driveshaft from the final drive and lay it on the tunnel brace; place a cloth on the tunnel brace to protect the shaft.

- Remove the left drive axle - B - from the flange and carefully lower it.

- Remove the right drive axle - B - from the flange and carefully lower it.

- Disconnect the harness connector - A - from the all wheel drive control module.

- Remove the vent lines - arrows - from the final drive.

Remove the final drive.

A second technician is needed to remove the final drive.

The "first technician" holds the final drive (near the driveshaft flange) while the "second technician" pushes the engine-/gearbox jack to the rear and all the way out from under the vehicle.

Then the whole final drive is removed.

- Discuss beforehand "who will hold the final drive and who will move the jack".

Installing

Install in the reverse order of removal. Note the following:

A second technician is needed to install the final drive.

Install the final drive.

The transmission jack must be "within reach" under the subframe/luggage compartment floor.

- Carefully install the final drive making sure both stop washers - B - on the rear bushings do not fall out or slide out of place.

- Support the final drive with the engine-/gearbox jack.

- Connect the connector - A - to the all wheel drive control module.

- Slide the vent lines - arrows - onto the final drive vent tubes.

- Lift the final drive using the engine-/gearbox jack into the installed position.

- Place both drive axles into the final drive flanges but do not tighten!

- Start with the right drive axle.

- Attach the driveshaft flexible disc to the final drive and tighten. Tightening specification, refer to => [ Driveshaft Overview ] Driveshaft Overview.

- Counterhold the rear final drive to tighten the driveshaft flexible disc bolts.

- Place the washer - C - on the front mounting bracket.

- Secure the final drive from below - B - but do not tighten the bolt yet.

- Remove the transmission jack from under the vehicle.

- Insert two new bolts - arrow - through the holes in the luggage compartment floor and tighten them.

- Install the caps.

- Install the trim panel and floor covering - A -.

- Lift the vehicle.

- Tighten the final drive from below - arrow -.

- Secure the pendulum support with new bolts.

- Align the intermediate bearing in its elongated holes so the driveshaft or bearing is not under stress.

When fastening the heat shield - 2 - to the intermediate bearing, ensure that the bolts - 1 - are within the four centering tabs.

- Install the stabilizer bar.

- Tighten drive axles.

- Install the noise insulation.

- Install the left rear level control system sensor.

- Install the exhaust system.

If the final drive is replaced:

- Check the oil level in the Haldex clutch. Refer to => [ Haldex Clutch Oil Level, Checking or Filling ] Haldex Clutch Oil Level, Checking or Filling.

- Check the oil level in the final drive. Refer to => [ Rear Final Drive Oil Level, Checking or Filling ] Rear Final Drive Oil Level, Checking or Filling.

Adjust the headlamps. Refer to the vehicle diagnostic tester.
